3 An illustrator can paint, draw, take photographs, or other artistic processes to make pictures for books. Talk about the different ways you can make pictures.

4 Pictures and books are sometimes as important as the stories
Pictures and books are sometimes as important as the stories. The way the pictures are made can represent the illustrator’s feelings, thoughts, and ideas about the words on the page. Do you think that the pictures in books are important? Would you enjoy books as much if they did not have pictures?

5 Some illustrators can be the author also
Some illustrators can be the author also. This means that they write the words and make the pictures for the story. This is a picture of Eric Carle.

6 Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of many books.

8 Eric Carle likes to illustrate animals and insects.
If you were an illustrator, what would you like to make pictures of? Why?

9 Eric Carle’s pictures look different than other people’s because he paints on tissue paper with acrylic. Then he cuts them out and glues the pieces together to make his animal characters. Have you ever seen any artwork that looks like this? Have you ever read an Eric Carle book? Do you like these pictures?
