Session II Classroom Policies and Procedures Chemical Hygiene Plan Classroom Environment Blood-borne Pathogens Standard Forms and Assessments Plants and Animals

Chemical Hygiene Plan Located in the Chemical Safety Program notebook housed at each school CHP was developed to set forth policies, operating procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment and work policies that are capable of protecting staff and students from health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used in science laboratories of DPS. It is intended to meet the CHP requirements of 29 CFR (Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories) and NC Board of Education Policy: Science Laboratory Safety (HSP-F-017). The recommendations and requirements are taken from: OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, NCDOL, NC. General Statutes Chapter 2: Personnel Responsibilities Chapter 3: Science Laboratory Protective Equipment Chapter 4: Chemical Procurement, Distribution, and Storage Chapter 5: Emergency Procedures Chapter 6: Chemical and Hazardous Materials Disposal Chapter 7: Classroom Environment Chapter 8: Assessments and Forms Chapter 9: Appendices

Classroom Environment Only qualified teachers should conduct experiments involving hazardous chemicals Emergency Procedures are clearly posted The room is well lit All emergency equipment is in proper working order The room is maintained in an orderly condition A method for inventorying and checking-in and checking-out of chemicals and – equipment should be put into practice Electrical outlets near water faucets have Ground Fault Interrupters (GFI) on them to protect students from electrocution The room has a functioning intercom/phone system

Assessments Classroom check off – yearly Laboratory check off – monthly Student Contracts – yearly Laboratory equipment check off – monthly Environmental Health and Safety - yearly

Animals Do not allow dead animals in the room Be certain that adequately sized and clean cages are provided for all animals. Students shall not perform dissection surgery on vertebrate animals except under direct supervision of a teacher. Animals should not be allowed in the vicinity of sinks Teachers should do an allergy assessment to determine which students may be affected by animals in the classroom. Never allow bare hands in the animal cage Change bedding, remove waste, disinfect cage daily

Plants Never use poisonous or allergic causing plants in the classroom. Never allow plants to be tasted without clear instruction from the teacher. Teachers should inquire about student allergies associated with plants. Do not use plants that present hazards from oils (poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, poinsettia other local plants).
