Today’s Presentation Overview of the GRIN-Global (GG) project Demonstration of the Public Website Discussion
The Need for GRIN-Global Many national genebanks lack effective information technology for documenting & managing collections electronically
Why Switch From GRIN? Genebanks interested in adopting GRIN were challenged by software licensing fees
GRIN…GRIN-Global In 2008, the Global Crop Diversity Trust awarded ARS a 3-year, $1.4 million grant to address global germplasm information management needs
GRIN…GRIN-Global USDA/ARS is devoting more than $1 million of in-kind support to the project Bioversity International will support the deployment of GRIN-Global internationally
GRIN-Global Project Mission Create… a new, scalable version of GRIN …powerful, flexible, easy-to-use PGR information management system an effective global network of genebanks Encourage… the use of PGR resources by researchers, breeders, and farmers (producers)
Customer Input Public Bulletin Board for 18 months Fall 2009 survey – 444 surveys completed by international and U.S. respondents – Sent more than 600 U.S. CGC invitations Feedback from presentations
Customer Input Survey respondents identified themselves as: researcher / breeder – 66% policy maker – 8% curators – 27% genebank staff – 21% grower / farmer – 8% (Multiple responses were allowed)
