Raise your hand if you believe Spanish Is a language of the future Will help with employment & jobs Is required for high school graduation Helps with college admissions Gives you opportunities to travel/study abroad Can help you build new relationships Will improve your understanding of English Will increase your vocabulary Will give you higher intelligence Will earn you more money.

Future of Spanish Worldwide Spanish is the 4th most spoken language in the world and the 2nd most studied as a 2nd language behind English. 21 COUNTRIES have Spanish as their official language. Over 50% of the Western Hemisphere speaks Spanish as their first language, making English a minority language in our region.. Today, nearly 500 million people across the world speak Spanish!

Future of Spanish in the US In both the US and Canada, Spanish is the most popular foreign language to learn. In the US it is the most popular by a very wide margin. Over the past decade, the demand for Spanish Language courses worldwide has almost doubled. In Prince George’s County, over 130,000 residents speak Spanish at home. The United States has the fifth largest Hispanic population worldwide, trailing Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Argentina (just barely behind Spain itself and Argentina). --Of this group of over 35 million people, 3 out of 4 say that Spanish is their primary language.

Employment & Jobs Due to this increase in Spanish-speaking people, there is a growing demand for Spanish in every field… Knowing both English and Spanish (even if not fluently) will give you a competitive edge over those who cannot. Individuals who are bilingual or proficient in another language have many more career choices. Just being able to speak some Spanish and having that on your resume can make the difference between it being in the trash or landing you a job! Some Job Opportunities: TRANSLATOR -- JOURNALIST TEACHER -- REPORTER TOUR GUIDE -- LAWYER FLIGHT ATTENDANT/PILOT BUSINESSMAN -- HOSPITALITY DOCTOR -- ENGINEER SOCIAL WORKER GOVERNMENT POSITIONS BANKING/FINANCE AND MORE!!

High School Graduation In Maryland, you have to take and pass 2 years of a foreign language to graduate. Next year, you can continue on to Spanish 1. For those of you in 8th grade, you’ll have an advantage over your classmates. If you’re in 6th or 7th grade now, you can get high school credit at Ernest Just. If you do that, by the end of high school, you’ll be able to earn college credit!

College Admissions Most colleges at least require 2 years of a foreign language to accept someone Although, the best & most selective schools require all 4 years of the same language! To admissions officers, it shows you’re dedicated in your classes and serious about your studies

Improve English, Vocabulary & Intelligence Students who study a foreign language for 3+ years score higher on their SATs/ACTs/GREs Bilingual students, on average, perform better in school and are better critical thinkers than their monolingual peers Studying Spanish also improves native English speakers’ understanding of English grammar & knowledge of using cognates to extract meaning

3-2-1 based on what you have learned today. You will work with a partner (1,2 3,4 5,6) The two of you will come up with: 3 things you found out 2 things that interested you 1 question that you have at the moment based on what you have learned today.

Travel & Study Abroad Most universities offer students the chance to study abroad in another country for a semester. However, students who are proficient or study a 2nd language take priority over others as programs fill up! Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity that will broaden understanding of the world, other cultures, and other people as well as develop appreciation for diversity in the world.
