CANNED HUNTING

THE HORROR

'like shooting fish in a barrel' In a canned hunt there is no patience, no chance and no skill. The animals in a canned hunt are enclosed, there is no escape.

Normal Hunt In a 'normal' hunt the hunter goes out armed with rifle and a bagful of patience. The animal is tracked down and killed, ideally with a single shot, a 'clean kill'. Often the hunter returns home empty handed. Where chance is part of the formula even the most stalwart anti-hunt individual would probably give a tiny degree of acceptance.

What is canned hunting? Canned hunting, the hunting of wild animals in a confined area from which they cannot escape, is not only legal in South Africa, it is flourishing. Hunters from all over the world, but notably from the United States, Germany, Spain, France and the UK, flock to South Africa in their thousands and send home lion body parts, such as the head and skin, preserved by taxidermists, to show off their supposed prowess.

Wild or tame? The animals involved are habituated to human contact, often hand-reared and bottle fed, so are no longer naturally fearful of people. Such animals will approach people expecting to get fed-but instead receive a bullet, or even an arrow from a hunting bow. This makes it easier for clients to be guaranteed a trophy and thus the industry is lucrative and popular.

This little lion cub was reared to be shot by hunters

A lucrative, thriving business…$$$$ Canned hunts are becoming big business. There are an estimated 1,000 game preserves in the U.S. Ted Turner, the country's largest private landowner, allows hunters to pay thousands of dollars to kill bison, deer, African antelopes, and turkeys on his 2 million acres. Most of these ranches operate on a "no kill, no pay" policy, so it is in owners' financial interests to ensure that clients get what they came for. Owners do this by offering guides who are familiar with animals' locations and habits, permitting the use of dogs, and supplying "feeding stations" that lure unsuspecting animals to food while hunters lie in wait.

Arguments For & Against Hunting FOR Hunting proponents argue that hunting is safe, effective, necessary, and inexpensive to taxpayers. The injury rate for hunting is lower than that of some other forms of physical recreation, such as football and bicycling. Hunters argue that hunting is a tradition, a ritual or a bonding experience.

AGAINST animals are often killed painfully animals suffer pain and fear during the chase animals that escape may be injured hunting involves unnecessary cruelty, as animal population control can be better done in other ways

the animals hunted in Britain are not significant agricultural pests the basic interests of the hunted animals are seriously violated in order to satisfy less basic human interests the animal interest is the basic one of continuing to live the trivial human interests are sport, pleasure and the preservation of cultural traditions the serious human interests are the protection of agriculture, the conservation of the environment and the provision of human employment.

And don’t forget…… it is morally wrong to kill for pleasure

A cruel unscrupulous corrupted mind… One sick hunt organiser actually organised it so clients could use a computer from the comfort of their home and aim and shoot an animal many miles away.
