Wayne Theibaud

“If we don’t have a sense of humor, we lack a sense of perspective.”

Associated with Pop Art because of his interest in popular culture & mass production.

As a teenager, Thiebaud worked at a café named “Mile High and Red Hot”, an ice cream and hot dog shop….

…the inspiration for much of his subject matter.

Notice his use of color in shadowed areas. Shadows are never gray…always cool colors.

Wanye Theibaud VideoVideo WRITE DOWN THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN YOU SKETCHBOOK. ANSWER EACH QUESTION BASED ON THE VIDEO CLIP. 1. How old is Wayne Theibaud today? 2. What was Theibaud’s job in the Army? 3. Was he an immediate success as a painter? 3. What other famous artist(s) were making artwork at the start of Theibaud’s career? (1960s) 4. How much are Theibaud’s paintings worth today?

Theibaud’s painting style… Impasto, not always perfectly blended. Pastels, tints & shades Cool colored shadows Sharp angles, clean edges All areas of canvas are address with color… no white space. Proper perspective is vital.

Requirements… Create at least 3 thumbnails (2 per page) Consider the Rule of Thirds when choosing your composition Rule of 3rds: Imagery hits along lines or intersection of lines. Move around to find interesting perspectives. Thumbnails can be rectangular or square.

Sketch Examples *You don’t have to include your “rule of 3rds” lines within your sketches. *Remember to address details, textures, folds in fabric, light sources, etc.

Sketchbooks will be checked on Wednesday. 3 detailed sketches worth 30 points. Answers to Video Questions worth 20 points. You are permitted to draw one single cake/pie/cupcake within a composition if you’d like.
