Marine Protected Areas assessment 2013 – Report outline 2/6 Current report structure: 1.Introduction & structure 2.A description of MPA networks within European Regional Seas 3.Towards coherent and representative MPA networks in Europe 4.Lessons learned from well-managed MPAs App pp. report Close dialogue with DG ENV, Units B3 and C2 Main objective is to provide a baseline for marine protected areas in European Seas: a)Presenting an overview of the current progress of designating MPAs using: I.Natura 2000 database II.CDDA III.RSC (OSPAR, HELCOM, MedPAN) IV.NEAFC (for High Seas) b)Develop baseline information layers (coastline, MSFD regions and subregions etc.) c)Demonstrate information gaps d)Initiate discussion on criteria for assessing ecological coherence through case studies in Western Mediterranean and North Sea Secondary objective: Support DG ENV with their 2014 Progress report on MPAs to the Council and Parliament as defined by MSFD art. 21
