WHAT IS A HURRICANE? A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone–an organized rotating weather system that develops in the tropics. TROPICAL DEPRESSION An organized system of persistent clouds and thunderstorms with a closed low-level circulation and maximum sustained winds of 38 mph (33 knots) or less. TROPICAL STORM An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a well defined circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph (34-63 knots). HURRICANE An intense tropical weather system with a well-defined circulation and sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher.

The North Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th. The vast majority of tropical storm and hurricane activity typically occurs during the August-October peak of the hurricane season. An average hurricane season features approximately 11 named storms. * An above average hurricane cycle began in 1995.

A Hurricane Warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected in a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less. Hurricane conditions include winds of 74 miles an hour (64 knots) and/or dangerously high tides and waves. Actions for protection of life and property should begin immediately when the warning is issued.

HURRICANES are named to provide ease of communication between forecasters and the general public regarding forecasts, watches, and warnings. Since the storms can often last a week or longer and that more than one can be occurring in the same basin at the same time, names can reduce the confusion about what storm is being described.
