Eclipses When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. There are 2 types of eclipses: solar (sun) eclipse & lunar.

Eclipses Solar and Lunar

What is a solar eclipse The moon passes in a direct line between the Sun and the Earth The moon’s shadow blocks out the sun light as seen from Earth

When does a solar eclipse take place? During an eclipse season and must be in a correct phase. ◦For a solar eclipse to happen it has to be in the phase of a new moon. This is why solar eclipses are very rare.

A total solar eclipse

Types of Solar Eclipses The moon's shadow has two parts: A central region (umbra) and an outer region (penumbra). Depending upon which part of the shadow passes over you, you will see one of three types of solar eclipses: 1. Total - The entire central portion of the sun is blocked out. 2. Partial - Only part of the sun's surface is blocked out. 3. Annular - Only a small, ring-like sliver of light is seen from the sun's disc.

Now onto Lunar eclipses... Picture yourself on the moon looking out to the sun. Then all the sudden, you see a red ring where the sun was. And the moon became red That’s a lunar eclipse...

Lunar Eclipse Animation

So in conclusion... A lunar eclipse is when the earth is playing monkey in the middle with the sun and the moon. ◦The Earth casts its shadow onto the moon A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is the monkey in the middle between the sun and the Earth ◦The moon casts a shadow on the Earth
