Analog TV Transmission Step 1: Camera records show in studio Step 2: antenna transmits digital broadcast Step 3: analog signal transmits through airwaves Step 4: home antenna receives signal Step 5: Television interprets analog signals

Traditional Cable Networks (CATV) Consists of a cable TV office (headend) with receiving antenna Unidirectional coaxial cable with amplifiers (approximately every 8,000 feet) Splitters and coaxial taps separate off to neighborhood and household

Digital TV Transmission Step 1: Camera records show in studio Step 2: antenna transmits digital broadcast Step 3: digital signal transmits through airwaves Step 4: home antenna receives signal Step 5: Television processes digital signals

Hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) Network Regional cable head (similar to cable office of CATV) Branches to multiple distribution hubs –High bidirectional bandwidth fiber with amplifiers Switches separate neighborhoods with fiber Which then converts to a coaxial cable

Compare and Contrast Analog TV 525 scanning lines interlace - the screen shows every odd lines at one time, and then show the even lines at the other time Artifacts present until a distance of 8 times the picture height A field of vision of less than 10 degrees at distance stated above Traditional TV uses around 200,000 pixels to show pictures Five times less color information conveyed High Definition TV 720 or 1080 scanning lines interlaced - the screen shows the whole picture every time and “refresh[es]” the screen every sixtieth of a second No artifacts present at 3 times the height of the picture A field of vision of 30 degrees at distance stated above HDTV uses around 2 million pixels to show pictures Five times more color information conveyed 5.1 dolby digital surround sound *List from HDTV High Definition Television :
