Background Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, and died on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was an American clergyman, activist, and a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

Martin Luther King Jr. I Have A Dream Speech

Me giving the “Martin Luther King Jr. Speech” “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood.”

SOAPSTone- Subject Subject- This speech that Is given is to give people hope that one day colored and whites would joins hands and for there to not be conflict. “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

SOAPSTone- Occasion The speech “I Have A Dream” was given August 28, 1963 and was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

SOAPSTone- Audience Audience- The Audience for the speech “I Have A Dream” was meant for colored and white people to get them to join together and not fight over the color of the skin.

SOAPSTone- Purpose Purpose- The purpose of the speech was to join colored and white people together, and not have conflict because of colored people.

SOAPSTone- speaker Speaker: Martin Luther King Jr. changed the way that white people acted towards colored people. He showed that colored people are no different.

SOAPSTone- tone Tone: the tone of the speech was serious, prepared, demanding, powerful, and eager to make a change.

Logos Logos: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to say that one day, everyone will be treated equal.

Repetition I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.“ I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

Phrasing/Meaning I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. Martin Luther King Jr. still had high expectations through the rough times.

Powerful Lines “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood.”

Literary Devices Used I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Martin Luther King Jr. is saying that he wants his children to live in peace instead of being treated differently because of the color of there skin.

To follow… The speech “I Have A Dream” brought colored people and whites together as one. There was no more conflict between them. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by a sniper as he stood on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis and died on April 4 th, other men, women, and children were killed during this time, 34 of them were black.
