The new seven wonders Acropolis in Greece The new seven wonders Acropolis in Greece Katerina Solomou

I suggest “The Acropolis of Athens” to be considered for the election of the new seven wonder of the world. A visit to Athens without going to the Acropolis to see the ancient ruins as well as the Parthenon would not be a complete one. Acropolis and the Parthenon are so important because they were the most perfect buildings ever built.by the world’s most advanced civilization and even though we have been studying it for centuries we are still not sure how they did it

Acropolis is the greatest and finest sanctuary of ancient Athens and it was dedicated to its patron goddess Athena. The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis were built at the time of Pericles in the fifth century BC. The term Acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an Acropolis where the inhabitants can go as o place of refuge in times of invasion. The term Acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an Acropolis where the inhabitants can go as o place of refuge in times of invasion.

The Parthenon was designed by the architects Kallikratis and Iktinos as the home of the massive statue of Athena.

It took nine years to built and was completed in 438BC. What makes the Parthenon so fascinating is that to look at it you would think that it is made up of interchangeable pieces for example the columns are stones placed on top of each other and you could replace one piece of a column with any of the others. The Parthenon is the most perfect and the most immitated building in the world.

The Erecthions sits on the most sacred site of the Acropolis where Poseidon and Athena had their contest over who would be the Patron of the city. The buildings contain the porch of. Caryatids which are now copies, four of which have now been placed in the Acropolis museum. The fifth one was taken from Acropolis by Lord Elgin and is exhibited in the British Museum more than a century ago.
