The Parthenon, a temple built in honor of Athena, the patron of the city of Athens, was the result of the cooperation of major architects and sculptors in the middle of 5th century. The Parthenon is the most important historical monument of the Athens’s community and it’s built on the rock of the Acropolis. Its construction began in BC and it was inaugurated in 438 BC in the great Panathenaic festival. It’s architect was Feidias and its most important features were frieze, the metopes and pediments on all of its sides. Moreover what makes it unique are its pillars, with the Doric style. According to the Centre for world Heritage of UNESCO, the Parthenon has been included in the most famous monuments of the world since Nowadays thousands of tourists are visiting it to admire its architecture and of course the unbelievable Greek civilization. 5 “Metopes of the Parthenon”
The metopes of the Parthenon are embossed plates which are placed on the architrave of the temple and between the triglyphs of it. They are a total of 92, divided into 32 per side (northern, southern ) and 14 per side (east, west ) of the temple. In the Parthenon are now all the metopes of the temples ends (mostly copies of artificial stone), while many of the metopes of the long sides are lost during the siege of Athens by the Venetians of Morosini in 1687 , are now hosted in the British Museum and the Louvre Museum. They are approximately sized 1,375x1,30m and are made of Pantelic marble. Traces of colour are not saved, but it is thought that they were probably painted in bright colors. At on interpretation their background was painted red with blue the upper embossed tape. The well-preserved metopes of the south side show clearly that they are the words of many different hands.
