Part 1) ProStructures SS7 Drawing Production Theory Structural steel Design drawings (general arrangements), steel placing drawings, Shop drawings (AISC shown – similar world-wide): Concrete Design drawings and rebar placing drawings (CRSI shown – similar world-wide): ProSteel is a product that’s been around now for several years at Bentley and many more years prior to Bentley’s acquisition of it. The SS7 release of PowerProStructures includes a substantial change to the way Drawing production is performed – at least for concrete and rebar drawings. Let’s review the theory behind ProStructures’ drawing production. Let’s begin by looking at the definition of “structural steel drawings” compared to the definition of “Concrete and rebar drawings”. These definitions are taken from AISC for steel, and CRSI for rebar – both US-based organizations, but world-wide organizations are very similar for the purposes of these definitions. Please note that structural steel drawings include: Design Drawings (General Arrangments), Erection drawings, Shop Drawings (often referred to as fabrication drawings). For rebar– typically Rebar Placing Drawings are required which show information required to “set the reinforcing bars into place in the formwork”. “Reinforcing bar placing drawings… provide the details and placing instructions so that the ironworkers can set the reinforcing bars into place in the formwork”.

Part 1) ProStructures SS7 Drawing Production Theory Some structural software products use the same workflow for structural steel drawings and concrete drawings: Structural steel fabrication drawings are a combination of design drawings, single part drawings + placing drawings. Concrete drawing production: Design drawings convey design intent of concrete and rebar Rebar typically fabricated from bar schedules and/or bar tags Rebar placing drawings are for placing rebar and often re-use the design drawings Bentley’s Rebar2PC project (2013-2014): Driver: Concrete Drawing Production Need to display, label, dimension concrete shapes like a user wants to. Need to display, label, dimension rebar like a user wants to. Traditionally in the CAD or BIM world, structural steel software products have been more mature than software for reinforced concrete. Therefore, most commercially available software products use the same workflow for steel fabrication drawings and concrete drawings. But we’ve already seen that by definition, steel fabrication drawings are different from concrete drawings. It really comes down to this message, and most engineers and structural designers get this quickly: Steel fabrication drawings are mostly single part drawings, while rebar is typically fabricated from bar bending schedules and bar tags. In 2013, Bentley Software began an internal development project code-named Rebar2PC, this project has now culminated in the SS7 release. The main driver for this release was: Concrete Drawing Production. “Display concrete like a user wants, display rebar like a user wants”.

Part 1) ProStructures SS7 Drawing Production Theory Structural steel: DetailCenter Concrete: Dynamic Views and Hypermodeling So, with SS7 ProStructures we have the best of both worlds: We still have DetailCenter for Steel Fabrication Drawings, and Dynamic Views and Hypermodeling for Concrete Drawing Production. DetailCenter allows users to produce several different views of the same object, while Dynamic Views allow a single view of several different objects – each symbolized and labeled accordingly.

Part 1) ProStructures SS7 Drawing Production Theory Beginning with (Power) ProStructures SS7: Dynamic Views are the recommended best-practice method for producing drawings for concrete and rebar drawings. DetailCenter remains the recommended best practice to produce steel fabrication drawings (and remains an option for concrete drawing production as well). Note: for precast concrete panels and other similar concrete objects, DetailCenter may be the best option. So, beginning with SS7 PowerProStructures, Dynamic views are the recommended best practice for concrete and rebar drawings. While DetailCenter remains the recommended best practice for steel fabrication drawings. No other structural software product has a dedicated workflow uniquely designed for steel as well as concrete.

Part 1) ProStructures SS7 Drawing Production Theory ProConcrete SS7 provides two methods of displaying 3D rebar in drawings: 1) 2D views of the 3D rebar without any symbolization (drawing on left below) 2) 2D symbolic graphics (drawing on right below) The rest of today’s presentation will focus on concrete drawing production using Dynamic Views. The first thing to know is that 3d Rebar from the model can be shown on the drawing in two ways: 1) on the left- hand side the 3d rebar can be shown as it appears in the 3d model – but in the 2d dynamic view. This type of drawing is useful when rebar is desired to be shown in the background of a drawing such as an architectural drawing. 2) The more common method is to symbolize the rebar automatically – as you see on the right side. Part 2) Dynamic Views Workflow Definition of “Dynamic Views”: (source: MicroStation Help file): Dynamic Views is a general name that encompasses several related technologies which share a common goal of making model analysis and documentation more interactive and intuitive. Gone are the days when designs were just static [snapshot] views. They are replaced by the ability to create live, intelligent sections of a design composition that update automatically (through the use of detailing symbols with fields and links) as the design evolves.

ProConcrete Workflow (Modeling) 3D DGN File All Rebar in ProConcrete must belong to a concrete object - either a ProConcrete parametric object or a promoted solid. In the SS7 release, the 3D Rebar and the concrete object must be placed in the same DGN file. Rebar may protrude outside the extents of it’s owner concrete (including entirely outside), and may extend over multiple other concrete objects. Concrete and Rebar objects both have their own levels( ) colors, line weights, etc. Parent Child (both reside in same DGN file)

Dynamic Views Workflow (ProConcrete) 3D DGN File All Drawing models with 2D symbolic rebar must be saved to the 3D DGN file containing the concrete and rebar. Leave this turned OFF if you want 2D symbolic rebar in DV’s. Note: In ProConcrete, when you want 2d symbolic rebar you must cut the Dynamic Views from within the same model as the rebar and concrete. This workflow is different from other Bentley applications which allow the use of a BIM container model in which all DV’s are cut from.

Some cases would be: When you will do only manual labeling and dimensioning of rebar. When the rebar is shown in the background. USING THIS OPTION MEANS ALL REBAR LABELING AND DIMENSIONING WILL BE DONE MANUALLY WITH STANDARD MICROSTATION DRAWING COMMANDS. THIS OPTION IS AN ALTERNATIVE ONLY, THE RECOMMENDED WORKFLOW IS TO USE 2D SYMBOLIC REBAR. * see speaker notes
