1 BricsCAD BIM Training Session Documents: http://bit.ly/2gVzElb
Based on training session by Kevin Settlemyre

2 Agenda: Section 1: BIM Basics Break Section 2: BIM Components
Section 3: BIM the Model Section 4: BIM Workflows Section 5: BIM Structural Done - Have a great evening…

3 Section 1: BIM Environment + the Basics
Contains: Introduction The User Interface and the Quad Key concepts to keep in mind… Modeling features + approaches Hands-on #1 Q&A + section wrap-up

4 BricsCAD BIM Mindset Concepts
Modeling is primarily in 3d to generate 2d More important to think and act smart, than to just act fast 2D CAD skills can be strong complements to BIM

5 The UI 1 3 5 7 4 6 2 8

6 The Quad An alternative to the ribbon Commands at your fingertips
Intelligence behind what is displayed based on entity highlighted and most recent commands Keeps users in the working environment

7 Key Concepts - Edges, Surfaces and Solids

8 Key Concepts - Ctrl and Tab keys: Gateways to features

9 Key Concepts - Highlight vs. Select

10 Modeling: Solids

11 2. Create new ones from boundary surfaces
Modeling: BIMDrag 1. Manipulate individual entities 2. Create new ones from boundary surfaces Connect entities Be creative, there are endless ways BIMDrag and Connect with nearest can be used

12 Modeling: Boundaries 1. Create solids from it 3. Create complex shapes
4. Be creative… 2. Create solids with it

13 Modeling: BIMDrag Alternatives
Extrude Create Subtract Unite Taper Angle (surface dependent) Set Direction Set Limit Push/Pull Extend or subtract (no relationship)

14 Hands-on #1 – create an office layout

15 Section 2: BIM Components
Contains: BIMinsert and Standard Libraries Parametric Components BIMSections Hands-on #2a Hands-on #2b Q&A + section wrap-up

16 BricsCAD BIM Mindset Concepts
Components are also .dwg files Components once inserted are block references Components can be changed by properties and parameters Set up a project folder (flat) for all project related files

17 BIM Components Component BIM

18 Creating Dynamic Components: Mechanical Browser

19 Dynamic Component Parameters

20 Hands-on #2a – create a basic component

21 Modeling: BIMInsert 1 2

22 Modeling: BIMInsert – Dynamic Input

24 Modeling: Getting Inside the BIM
BIMSections X-Ray Hide Entities

25 Modeling: BIMSections
Plane Volume (Detail) Highlight desired BIMSECTION Quad select DEFINE DETAIL SECTION Draw detail rectangle Define depth to complete volume

26 Hands-on #2b – BIMInsert components

27 Section 3: BIM the Model Contains: Structure browser
Classifications & Compositions Hands-on #3 BIMSection Workflow Layouts and Sheet Sets Hands-on #4 Q&A + section wrap-up

28 BricsCAD BIM Mindset Concepts
The Structure Browser is your query platform to the BIM Important to think about how everything fits together Keep the data relationships present in your mind

29 Structure Browser “Interactive Tree” Reports on everything in BIM
Establish/Define Order Customization Checking

30 Classifications A first level of categorization
Useful from earliest stage of design, when compositions may not yet be defined. Fits into default setup of Structure browser According to IFC classes

31 Spatial Locations Define Site, Buildings and Floors
Multiple buildings can be within the same file Provides a high level categorization for sets of entities Feeds into Structure Browser

32 Properties Entity property sections & fields Building & Story
Room Properties Changing single or multiple entities

33 BIM Compositions Layer assembly (plies) Material library
Browser Dialog Layer assembly (plies) Material library Use, edit or create In Library & In Project Opens doorway to additional detail in BIM

34 Composition Plies Edit ply relationships at intersections within the BIM Activate composition geometry to enable changing the forms for specific layers Turn ON BIM: Display compositions to activate Highlight end surface and use BIMDrag to edit

35 Hands-on #3 – BIM Compositions
Structure Browser BIM Compositions BIM Composition Plies

36 Key Concepts - BIM Section Workflow
CREATE BIMSections CREATE sheets Generate + Open Add Detail

37 Sheet Set Browser Multiple BIMSections of multiple scales can be included Viewports & blocks Updates changes in BIM model Annotations and geometry can be added to sheets

38 Sheets Multiple BIMSections of multiple scales can be included
Viewports & blocks Updates changes in BIM model Annotations and geometry can be added to sheets

39 Hands-on #4 – BIM Sections, Sheets and Sheet Sets

40 Section 4: BIM Workflows
Contains: BIM Workflows (including IFC) Closing Discussion

41 BricsCAD BIM Mindset Concepts
IFC is another strong way to categorize the BIM There can be different ways to approach a model that can keep it nimble. What goes in, can come out BIMSection Workflow - “What is the right amount of detail?”

42 File Management Example Project Folder
Best Practice: Set up Project folder. Keep it flat. Where the BIM dwg is, is where BIMSection dwgs will be generated by default All other file types generated will by default go to this folder. Different File types .Dwg (BIM, components, sheets, XREF bases) .Dst (sheet set) .Dxd (configuration files – Structure browser) .png (images) .csv (data extraction)

43 Templates Provides pre-defined settings for a number of settings
Units, layers, BIMsections, sheet set creation, etc. Understand hierarchy of files BIM to BIMSection (.dwg) BIM to sheet set (.dst) Sheet set (.dst) to sheet (.dwg) BIMSection (.dwg) to sheet (.dwg) Sheet sets have a sheet template associated (sheet size)

44 Workflows - IFC IFC2x3 CV2.0 Certified Import & Export Options
Associate IFC properties

45 Workflows – BIM and XREFs

46 Workflows – Adding Rooms

47 Workflows – Adding Detail (an introduction)
1 2 3 Create BIMPatch in Modelspace on BIMSection view In Modelspace double- click to launch “Reference Edit”, select desired BIMPatch Add more detail within BIMPatch

48 Section 5: BIM Structural
Contains: Introduction to the new structural tools Hands-on #5 Closing Discussion

49 Structural Tools A new set of tools to easily and intuitively model structural elements such as beams and columns Integrated library of steel profiles New selection tool

50 Modeling Tools Linear solids Eccentricities Connections

51 Profile Library Based on several standards and manufacturer catalogues
Most commonly used profile shapes Start drawing from scratch or ‘drag-and-drop’

52 Select Solids

53 Hands-on #5 – Adding a canopy

54 Thank you for your attention!
