How to make Ice Cream in a Bag!

Things you need! Sandwich & quart zipper bags Half & Half/Milk/Heavy Whipping Cream 1 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (or chocolate or strawberry) 6 tbsp salt (rock salt works well, too)! 2 cups ice cubes (1 ice cube tray worth)

Ingredients Mix vanilla extract, sugar, and milk. Pour into smaller size bag and seal closed. Put ice cubes and salt into larger size bag. Place the bag with milk mixture into the ice mixture bag and seal closed.

Almost Done! Make sure bags are sealed COMPLETELY, hold bag with both hands and shake for 5-10 min. You will feel the ice cream getting thicker.

Finally! When ice cream is desired thickness, remove bag from ice mixture. Wipe the outside of bag with rag or dish towel to remove salt. If you do not do this, you will have salty ice cream :( - Open your ice cream, pour into dish, and enjoy!

Ice vs. Rock Salt

What is the secret with Rock Salt? Rock Salt (or even table salt) lowers the freezing point of water into ice. It makes the ice very cold. It simulates a freezer so that the cream mixture will solidify and make ice cream. This is called “Freezing Point Depression”

Why is salt spread on roadways during a winter storm? Salt messes with the freezing point of water. If it is freezing outside water will turn to ice. Salt helps water stay water by lowering the freezing point. Water will stay water longer so that drivers can drive on water rather than ice. Ice has less friction and can be very dangerous!

Antifreeze and Coolant Antifreeze results in Freezing Point Depression Coolant results in Boiling Point Elevation Ethylene glycol is the active chemical in this antifreeze/coolant product.
