What is anorexia nervosa? ➲ Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by immoderate food restriction and irrational fear of gaining weight, as well as a distorted body self- perception.

What are the signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa? ➲ Extreme weight loss ➲ Thin appearance ➲ Abnormal blood counts ➲ Fatigue ➲ Insomnia ➲ Dizziness or fainting ➲ A bluish discoloration of the fingers ➲ Refusal to eat ➲ Denial of hunger ➲ Afraid of gaining weight

Who suffers from anorexia nervosa more - females or males? ➲ Most people associate eating disorders predominantly with girls and women. However, in the last 10 years there has been increasing recognition that males suffer from eating disorders as well. And there are important differences to consider in the ways eating disorders start in males, how they evolve clinically, and what treatment approaches are most effective.

What age group of pepole suffer from anorexia nervosa most? ➲ The beginning of adolescence and the late teens are peak periods for people with eating disorders to experience their first symptoms, although eating disorders may first occur at any age (11-17). In young women, the average age at which anorexia nervosa first appears is 19 years of age (with a range of years of age)

Is it a dangerous illness? ➲ Anorexia nervosa has many complicated implications and may be thought of as a lifelong illness that may never be truly cured, but only managed over time. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by low body weight, inappropriate eating habits and obsession with having a thin figure. Individuals suffering from it may also practice repetitive weighing, measuring, and mirror gazing. It is a serious mental illness with a high incidence of comorbidity and similarly high mortality rates to serious psychiatric disorders.

Treatment of anorexia nervosa ➲ If a person who suffers from anorexia is in any danger to him or herself through lack of eating (e.g., starvation), immediate hospitalization should be carefully considered. Many individuals who suffer from this disorder see no problem with their body weight and will actually perceive themselves as being overweight. They may present to treatment, therefore as unwilling and uncooperative participants, brought in by family, friends, or another concerned professional.
