Auditorium Class Fall 2013

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:17-20 Elders Let the “elders that rule well” (5:17) Not all “older men” (5:1), but specific older men who “rule.” Acts 20:17 Paul called for the “elders of the church” and gave them instruction wrt the church. Acts 20:28 They were “overseers” 1 Peter 5:2 They were to take the “oversight” 1 Timothy 3:1-2 An elder is in the “office of a bishop” 1 Timothy 3:5 Elders “take care of the church of God”

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:17-20 Elders Worthy of “double honor” (5:17-18) It looks like verse 18 explains the reason for this extra measure of honor and describes compensation for labor. 1 Corinthians 9:6-13 Another example of labor and compensation using the same illustration of the ox treading the corn (Deuteronomy 25:4). 5:17 Example of an elder worthy of double honor: “especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.” Matthew 10:10; 20:7-8 A laborer receives his reward.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:17-20 Elders “Receive not an accusation” (5:19) A charge of sin (reference 5:20) Don’t believe and accept the accusation as true Example of “receive”: Acts 22:18 “they will not receive thy testimony” Except at the mouth of two or three witnesses Two or three people can substantiate the accusation.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:17-20 Elders “Them that sin rebuke before all...” (5:20) Specifically, or at least, an elder of verse 19.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:21-22 Paul’s charge for Timothy to carry out his instruction. Without preferring one above another (21) Galatians 2:6,9; Acts 10:34 God’s requirements apply regardless of station and God is no respecter of persons. Don’t accept too soon (22) Example: I Timothy 3:10 “let these first be proved” Don’t share in other’s sin, keep thyself pure (22). We don’t want to help someone do something wrong or go along with someone doing wrong. Examples: 2 John “he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds” 3 John 11 “follow not that which is evil” Exodus 23:2 “thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil” “It’s the elder’s responsibility, only they will be held accountable”

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 Side note: We want to be careful not to “context a passage to death” and strip away proper general application of a passage simply because the general statement was used in a specific context. That is part of handling aright the word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15). 1 Timothy 5:22 teaches us “lay hands suddenly on no man,“neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” From this passage we should understand not to be partaker of other men’s sins even in regard to something other than the work of elders.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 Side note. Here are some examples of general statements that apply to more than simply the specific topic under consideration. 1 Corinthians 15:33 “bad company corrupts good character” not only taught the Corinthians and us that we should beware of “false teachers on the resurrection” (15:12) but also that we should beware of our worldly friends. Matthew 15:14 “if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch” not only applied to the Pharisees and those who listened to them on their doctrine of “corban”, but it applies to us as we hear teachers today.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6: John 9 “whosoever transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God” not only applied to the gnostic who denied that Jesus came in the flesh (v7), but in general to anyone who goes beyond the word of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 14:35 “for it is a shame for women to speak In the church” not only applied/applies to a context of spiritual gifts but to any “woman preacher” then and now.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:23 Drink no longer water... A medicinal use, “stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities” Would not think Paul had to instruct Timothy simply to drink grape juice. Remember Paul’s instructions concerning a liberty (Romans 14:21) and Solomon’s warning (Proverbs 23:31-35).

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 5:24-25 Sins and good works Some men’s sins are open and known. Some men’s sins will not show up until judgment. Some men’s good works are open and known. And maybe in the sense of the ESV, “even those that are not (not open, i.e. they are hidden, BAS) cannot remain hidden.”

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 6:1-2 Servants Count their believing master worthy of full respect (1). Serve them even better (2). That the name of Christ be not blasphemed. The way we live will cast reflection on God and the gospel. e.g. 2 Samuel 12:14 David’s adultery caused God’s enemies to blaspheme.

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 6:3-5 Doctrine does matter! How could one read these verses and think that it does not matter what we teach? Matthew 15:9 “in vain do they worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” Galatians 1:9 “if any man preach any other gospel... let him be accursed” 1 Timothy 4:1 “some shall depart from the faith, giving heed...”

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 6:3-5 Doctrine does matter! Side note. We don’t have to understand “Greco-Roman culture” to please God. But we do have to consent to “the words of our Lord Jesus Christ” (6:3). It may be fine to know all manner of secular information – unless we choose to believe the ISBE over the B.I.B.L.E. Ephesians 3:4 “as I wrote... whereby, when ye read, ye may understand...” 2 Timothy 3:16 “all scripture is profitable... that the man of God may be perfect...” 2 Peter 1:3 “his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him...”

1 Timothy 5:17-25; 6:1-10 6:6-10 “The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil” (NASV) Proverbs 15:16-17 “better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.” Proverbs 15:27 “he that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.”
