Acupuncture Treatment of Diseases Pediatrics: Childhood Hyperactivity 小儿多动症

Definition: 1.Refers to the disease of children with normal intelligence but will the inability to control their behavior and concentration. 2.Shows signs of hyperactivity, difficulty studying, disability in controlling emotions and portraying abnormal behavior.. 4.Related with many biological, psychological and sociological factors in western medicine.

Causes and Pathogenesis : 1.Caused by prenatal weakness – deficiency of the kidney essence (yin) leading to yang hyperactivity, resulting in stirring of internal wind. 2.Emptiness of the sea of marrow resulting in failure of the nourishment of the spirit. 3.Deficiency in the spleen and heart resulting in poor nourishment of the heart and spirit.

Clinical Manifestations: Chief symptoms: i.Unstable emotions. ii.Abnormal behavior. iii.Hyperactivity. iv.Poor coordination. v.Disability to concentrate.

Clinical Manifestations: 1.Yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity type Stated manifestations with: i.Irritability and hyperactivity. ii.Talkative. iii.Heat sensation in the chest, soles and palms. iv.Night sweats. v.Dreaminess. vi.Dry and red tongue. vii.Thin tongue coating. viii.Thready (Wiry), rapid pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: 2.Heart-Spleen deficiency type Stated manifestations with: i.Restlessness. ii.Poor memories. iii.Profuse dreaming iv.Easily got frightened. v.Swallow complexion. vi.Poor appetite vii.Loose stools. viii.Pale tongue. ix.Thin white tongue coating. x.Thready, slow pulse.

Treatment : General principle Calm the mind, heart and spirit. Replenish the brain and promote intelligence. Nourish yin and suppress yang. Principle channels: 1.GV channel.. 2.Kidney channel. 3.Liver channel. 4.Heart channel. 5.EX-O points.

Principle acupoints : 1.GV 20 Baihui 百会. 2.LR 3 Taichong 太冲. 3.KI 3 Taixi 太溪. 4.HT 7 Shenmen 神门. 5.EX-HN 3 Yintang 印堂.

Prescription explanation (Principle acupoint): 1.GV 20 Baihui 百会, EX-HN 3 Yintang 印堂 : Channel acupoint of the GV and extra ordinary point, chosen to calm the mind and the spirit. 2. KI 3 Taixi 太溪, LR 3 Taichong 太冲 : Shu-Stream and Yuan-Source acupoint of the KI and LR channel where qi of the viscera originates, passes and stays, chosen to nourish yin and suppress yang. 3.HT 7 Shenmen 神门: Shu-Stream and Yuan-Source acupoint of the HT channel where qi of the viscera originates, passes and stays, chosen to calm the heart spirit.

Principle of treatment 1.Yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity type Calm the mind, heart and spirit. Replenish the brain and promote intelligence. Nourish yin and suppress yang. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.SP 6 Sanyinjiao 三阴交. 2.GB 43 Xiaxi 侠溪.

Principle of treatment 2.Heart-Spleen deficiency type: Calm the mind, heart and spirit. Replenish the brain and promote intelligence. tonify heart and spleen. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: 1.BL 15 Xinshu 心俞. 2.BL 20 Pishu 脾俞. 3.ST 36 Zusanli 足三里.
