History: This structure was constructed in the seventeenth century under Louis XIV commands to shelter wounded and old soldiers and includes the more recent addition of Napoleon's tomb. Today, Les Invalides is now a museum and a national monument which is open every day of the year except January 1st, May 1st, November 1st, and Christmas day, as well as the first Monday of every month. The Hôtel des Invalides is located in the 7th arrondissement out of the 20 there are in Paris. The front side of this structure is 643 feet long. The whole complex is full of 15 courtyards, which were used for military parades.

Built at the end of the 20 th century, The Grande Arche de la Défense is a modern triumphal arch in La Défense, (the office district of Paris). The arch marks the end of the Triumphal Way, the east-west axis that connects the Louvre with La Défense. Inside the archway is a tent-like structure known as “the cloud”. It was created to reduce wind resistance and it also reduces the gigantic dimensions of the arch. ”The cloud” is made of white plastic panels that are attached by steel cables to the sides of the arch. Weighing over 300,000 tons, the Grande Arche is a huge marble- and-glass-clad concrete monument. Why was it built? The Grande Arche de La Defense was built in 1989 to mark the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Access to be able to go to the roof has been suspended since 2010 after a problem that had occurred with the elevator.
