Presentation transcript:

 Students will be able to:  Understand how signs of the number in an ordered pair indicate the point’s location in a quadrant of the coordinate plane.  Recognize how points indicated by ordered pairs that differ only by signs relate to reflections across one or both axes.  Find and graph rational numbers on a number line and ordered pairs of rational numbers on a coordinate plane.  Solve problems, including distance problems involving points with the same x-coordinate or same y-coordinate, by graphing points in all quadrants of the coordinate plane.  Demonstrate understanding of graphing rational numbers on a coordinate plane in new context

Before After Graphing  ____ _____ 1. On a coordinate plane, the x-axis is the horizontal (right/left) axis, and the y-axis is the vertical (up/down) axis.  _____ _____ 2. When plotting a point, always begin at (0,0)

 _____ _____ 3. When plotting the point (-3, 2), first  move left three spaces. Then move up  two spaces.   _____ _____ 4. The ordered pairs (2, 5) and (5, 2)  name the same point on the coordinate  plane.   _____ _____ 5. The ordered pair (0, 4) names a  point on the x-axis.

 Ordered pairs are a fundamental part of graphing.  Ordered pairs make up functions on a graph, and very often, you need to plot ordered pairs in order to see what the graph of a function looks like.

 Did you know there are 4 quadrants in a coordinate plane?  core/grade-6/6_NS-number-system/C/6 core/grade-6/6_NS-number-system/C/6
