Similes and Metaphors

Simile A comparison of two dissimilar objects that uses “like” or “as” EXAMPLES: As sweet as honey As easy as pie Soft like cotton Life is like a box of chocolates.

Metaphor A comparison of two dissimilar objects that does not use like or as. Usually, metaphors will use “is” or “are,” but not always. EXAMPLES My sister is a gremlin. That kid is a weasel. Without my coffee, I am a zombie.

Why do people use similes and metaphors? To make their ideas more interesting and profound! What sounds better: “You change your mind a lot.” OR “You change your mind like a girl changes clothes.” – Katy Perry, “Hot N’ Cold”

Are these similes or metaphors? “I got this icebox where my heart used to be.” – Omarion, “Ice Box” “Life is a highway. I wanna’ ride it all night long.” –Rascal Flats, “Life is a Highway” “Last name Ever / First name Greatest. Like a sprained ankle, I ain’t nothin’ to play with.” –Drake, “Forever” “Say my name and his in the same breath. I dare you to say they taste the same.” – Fallout Boy, “I Don’t Care” “I feel nice, like sugar and spice.” – James Brown, “I Got You (I Feel Good)” “A day without you is like a year without rain.” –Selena Gomez, “A Year Without Rain”

Task for Today: Complete on Notebook paper Find a simile or metaphor in a song that you like. Write out the line from the song that contains the simile or metaphor. Explain what two things are being compared. Explain what you think that the author’s intention was in using that simile or metaphor. You must complete this for both the simile and the metaphor. Write in complete sentences.

EXAMPLE: Metaphor Line: “Life is a highway. I wanna’ ride it all night long” –Rascal Flats, “Life is a Highway” This compares life to a highway. The author’s purpose in using this metaphor was: The author wishes to express his desire to live life to the fullest. For this assignment, you must find BOTH a simile and a metaphor. They must be found in two different songs. Write in complete sentences. You will be graded based upon: The accuracy of the similes/metaphors you choose (6 points) Your ability to identify the comparison (4 points) The strength of your analysis of the author’s purpose (10 points)

Similes and Metaphors in The Maze Runner Find a simile or metaphor in the text of The Maze Runner. This can be found in any chapter. Write a TIQA paragraph to analyze the use of the metaphor or simile. BUT FIRST… an example.

Don’t be afraid of TIQA! It’s just any easy way to organize your paragraph. In “Ice Box,” Omarion uses metaphor in order to express his feelings. In this song, Omarion laments the withdrawn relationship that he has come to have with his girlfriend. He sings, “I got this icebox where my heart used to be.” Omarion uses this metaphor to suggests that the distance between them has made him feel emotionally “cold.” He feels that their relationship has become too remote and impersonal. Blue = Topic: What will you be writing about? Orange = Introduction: Set up the situation. Purple = Quote: Give the quote in a sentence. Red = Analysis: Explain what the author really means.
