Cambridge School District, Idaho When teachers implement formative assessment as a process, in collaboration with their students, it can have powerful effects on student learning.

Who Should Participate? K-12 Teachers Instructional Coaches Professional Development Staff

Partnering States Districts, schools, departments or grade level teams within a school, and individuals in:

Our Course Our interactive platform provides teachers opportunities to learn with like-minded colleagues in their own school and in other schools around the country and apply their learning through demonstrations or modeling and practice. ConvenientCollaborativeRelevant Take the course from any location with internet access. Communicate with educators at your grade level, within and across subject areas. Learn concepts in context by trying them out in the classroom during the course.

Five Modules – Six Months

Module Structure Introductory Inquiry: video and guided analysis of formative assessment aspect; Guided Practice: analysis of video and vignettes using observation protocols; and Independent Implementation: plans to “try it out” – how to implement and revise as a result of the experience and feedback. 2 hrs. Per Week on Average | Course Total of Approximately 40 hrs.

Goals gain deeper knowledge of college and career ready standards across content areas; develop knowledge and skills in moving from standards to lesson learning goals; develop knowledge and skills in implementing formative assessment practices effectively in support of deeper learning; develop skills in involving students in learning and assessment processes; and learn about the role of structures and expectations in the classroom that support formative assessment. Participants will:

Collaborative Teamwork Course participants will be required to join a team (6-8 teachers per team) to share experiences as well as give and receive feedback on their respective formative assessment implementations. Groups of educators enrolling in the course may join a team together — individuals without a team will be assigned.

Prerequisites Access to a classroom in which to try out what you are learning; and Access to a computer and the Internet.

Course Credit Options in Idaho Course credit is available as an option. More details about these options will be available upon registration. Professional Education credit hours are available can apply to certificate renewal in all partnering states. Course Authors and Facilitators Margaret Heritage, Senior Scientist at WestEd, has worked in the area of formative assessment for many years as both a researcher and practitioner. She has made presentations on the topic all over the United States, in Australia and in Europe and she has published books, book chapters and articles on formative assessment. Nancy Gerzon, Senior Research Associate at WestEd, has extensive experience in professional learning and has authored online courses on formative assessment for a number of states.
