Podcasts What is a podcast? A podcast is an audio file that you can:  subscribe to, so that you don’t have to visit a website to listen to it - it will be delivered to you automatically  listen to the audio files online  download so that you can listen on your computer  download and listen to on an MP3 player. Since podcasts are portable, easily distributable and can be played on a variety of devices, listening activities can provide self-study activities or be set as homework.

How to use podcasts Podcasts can be used in different ways (and listened to on a variety of devices): Extensive listening Ask students to choose a podcast they wish to listen to on the British council podcast page or another chosen website. 1.Prepare a universal worksheet, which sets tasks such as: Summarize the key points of the podcast. Note something which surprised you. List three new / useful terms in the podcast, and explain their meaning. Or 2. Give the first worksheet from the student support pack Students can listen to the podcast at home; listen more than once; listen to selected parts of the podcast several times; or pause at will in order to take notes.

How to use podcasts Intensive listening Focus on one section of the podcast e.g. I’d like to meet and use it as a topic for the class Plan a PWP activities for the clip using the student support pack

How to play or download podcasts  DOWNLOADING PODCASTS To download the files, right-click on the title, choose 'Save target as', and select where you want to save the file.  BURNING ONTO A CD When the podcast is downloaded you can burn the podcast onto a CD and bring to class with you  PLAYING PODCASTS ON YOUR PC If you want to listen on your PC, just left click and the file will play in your default player.  PLAYING OR READING DOWNLOADED PODCASTS ON YOUR PC To play or read downloaded files, find the file you saved and double-click on it.  SUBSCRIBING TO THE PODCASTS New podcasts will automatically update on your google or yahoo homepage or in iTunes if you subscribe
