Taiga By: Julia Mino And Rachel Franklin. What is a Biome? A Biome is a habitat in a certain place. It is determined by the climate in that specific place.
The Taiga biome is the largest of the biomes in the world. It is located at the top of the world right bellow the Tundra biome and it spans across Eurasia.
Taiga (Boreal Forest) Taiga is a Russian word for forest. The Taiga or Boreal Forest, is the world’s largest biome. Living in the Taiga is cold and harsh.
The Taiga biome stretches across a large portion of Canada, Europe and Asia. It is the largest biome in the world. Winters are cold and summers are warm.

Animals Adaptation In the winter animals like bears grow long hair and hibernate. Before hibernation they eat a lot of food to last through the winter but in the spring they're hungry again. Some animals such as ducks and geese migrate to warmer land that has more food.

Animals Adaptation Some animals cope with the winter without hibernation or migration. They eat what they can find that is if they find anything. In the spring they come back. Animals like moose, snow shoe rabbits, and other animals have to find grass and water but other animals have to find meat and water.

Plants Adaptation Most trees have needles with a waxy coating. The needles are mostly dark. The trees slope downward to shed snow so they don’t break branches. Many plants can’t survive the harsh winter conditions. The trees grow close together to protect each other. Trees grow like a cone shape to protect it self.

Plants Adaptation There are few broad leaf trees in the Taiga- like the birch, poplar, and aspen. They loose their leaves in the fall to save energy in the winter. The leaves grow back in the spring. Grass in the Taiga is mostly found in open areas. Grass is also found by water.

Climate Weather Winter lasts for six to seven months with freezing cold air and snow. Fall is the shortest season when some trees loose leaves. Spring brings flowers, grass, melting ponds, and animals coming out of hibernation. Summer is hot, rainy, and short.

Climate Weather Winters lowest temperature is -65 degrees below the highest would be 30degrees above in the winter. Summer lowest temperature is 30 degrees the highest 75 degrees. The rain fall is 12 to 33in. Summer can be up to 20 hours long.

Interesting facts The taiga covers only 11% of the earth. There are no reptiles in the taiga due to harsh winter conditions.

Interesting Facts. Plant life in the Taiga consists mainly of evergreens and tough plants. There is only eight different types of trees. The world’s oldest trees are the bristlecone pines. One of them is 4,600 years old which is located in the Taiga.
