of 24 Introduction Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 Lesson 2 will explain the CPC Way of studying. Lesson Goals In this lesson you will: Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking Click here to continue. Learn what the CPC Way is. Apply the CPC Way.

of 24 What is the CPC Way of studying? The CPC Way asks us: The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking Click here to continue. C: To learn things in amounts that will not overflow our memory capacity. P: To organize them in a pyramid or outline of keywords so they will be easy to understand and learn. C: To chunk everything into one thing so it will be easy to remember and to use.

of 24 Let’s see exactly how we do this. To explain, we will use a very simple story. The story is about “Home” as shown in the next three slides. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of 24 The first story of the Fox-Dog course (Furukawa, 1983) is shown here. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 Each paragraph has four sentences with many words and even more letters. If we built a pyramid, it may look like the one in the next slide. There are fewer words as you go up the pyramid but more and more as you do down. At the top is only one word: Home. Below it are three words. Below those are many words and even more letters. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way likes

of 24 Look at the chunking outline to the right to see how you can remember the story the CPC Way. The CPC Way has three rules: The CPC Way of Studying HOME I. House A. house B. small C. green II. Mother A. mother B. my sister C. me III. Father A. father B. dogs C. cats Lesson 2: The CPC Way Click here to continue. 1. C: Learn only as many things as your capacity can hold. 2. P: Organize things in an outline like a pyramid 3. C: Chunk everything together.

of 24 Let’s apply the rules and learn the Home story. Before we do, let us imagine that your capacity is 3, and you don’t know the meaning of these words: house, small, green, mother, father, and dogs. Now you can apply the rules: CPC. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of Headings. The story has three parts or paragraphs, each with a heading: HOME: house, mother, and father. Think HOME and see if you can remember house, mother, and father. If you can, you have chunked the headings together to make one thing: HOME. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of House Paragraph. The House paragraph is about a house: house, small, and green. Think House and see if you can remember house, small, and green, or My house is small and green. Another way is to “picture” a small, green house (e.g., imagine that you are watching TV) as in in the next slide. If you can, you have chunked everything together for that paragraph into one thing. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of Mother and father paragraphs. Do the same thing for the Mother paragraph shown in the next slide and the Father paragraph following it. Now you will have one idea or concept to remember each paragraph. The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying However, if you remember the pictures, you can see that each picture contains all the information in the previous picture. Since the last one contains everything in all three paragraphs, remember it and you can recall everything about the HOME story. Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of 24 The CPC Way of Studying Now, the only word that you have to remembers is HOME and the last picture. That word and picture help you remember the headings: House, mother, father. House, in turn, helps you think of house, small, green: That is my home. It is small. It is green, or My house is small and green. You can remember the other paragraphs of the story in this same way. Lesson 2: The CPC Way CPC C = Capacity P = Pyramid C = Chunking

of What does the CPC Way of studying asks us to do? C = P = C = 2. At what part of the pyramid do we find one idea? 3. What are the three rules of the CPC Way? 4. What are the three parts or paragraphs of ? the HOME story? Answer your questions on a sheet of paper. The CPC Way: QUESTIONS 2-1 ? ? ? Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of C: Learn things in amounts that will not overflow our processing capacity. P: Organize them in an outline so they will be easy to remember and to use. C: Chunk everything into one thing so it will be easy to remember and to use. 2. We find one idea at the top of the pyramid. 3. The three rules are: C: Learn only as many things as your capacity. P: Organize things in a pyramid. C: Chunk everything together. 4. The three parts are house, mother, and father. The CPC Way: ANSWERS 2-1 Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 That’s the end of Lesson 2. Wasn’t that easy? All you have to remember is CPC: C = Capacity: Don’t overfill your capacity. P = Pyramid: Outline words in a pyramid. C = Chunking: Remember everything as one idea. You are on your way to learning a valuable, lifelong skill on how to improve achievement in school and later on the job. Fantastic! Lesson 2: The CPC Way

of 24 Lesson Two taught us that chunking information helps us to remember a main idea. Next In the next lesson we will learn about the importance of identifying keywords. Click the Next button to get started with Lesson Three. Summary Lesson 2: The CPC Way
