INDIA The Land of cultural diversity embossing unity and people symbolizing passion for oneness and freedom……

A Northern State of INDIA In one of its corner, an effort has been made to run a Community Led Program…..

SIRSA ……. The place where hundreds years old tradition has been changed in just a few weeks for one common purpose: SANITATION for improving the living conditions of the COMMUNITY.

Presentation on Rural Sanitation TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN In District Sirsa of Haryana Yudhbir Singh Additional Deputy Commissioner & CEO District Rural Development Agency Sirsa, Haryana, India

Under Total Sanitation Campaign SIRSA has been able to be One of the Districts of the Country to have all the villages as Open Defecation Free (ODF)

TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN is about……. Accelerating Sanitation coverage in rural areas. Covering Schools & Anganwadi Centers in rural areas with sanitation facilities. Encouraging suitable, cost effective and appropriate Technologies. Reducing the incidences of Water and Sanitation related Diseases. Generating felt need through Awareness Creation and Health Education. Bringing about an improvement in the general Quality of Life in the Rural Areas.

Making The History The Strategy……… To reach to the heart of village and change the very basics of the daily routine of villagers, a proper channel network was formed. VILLAGE CLUSTER BLOCK DISTRICT VILLAGE CLUSTER BLOCK

THE NETWORK District level :CEO heading District Monitoring Team. Block level :Block Coordinator heading Block Monitoring Team. Cluster level :Team of Motivators consisting of 8 to 10 Members covering 5 to 6 Villages Village level : Village Coordinator and Members of Swachchta Samiti.

The Work in Villages THE STRATEGY followed was to include people of all ages and make them understand the need for Open Defecation Free living. STEP 1 : A briefing by the Motivators regarding need for sanitation in the villages. STEP 2 : Awakening and Motivating Students and Women of the villages to come forward to help. STEP 3 : Formation of Swachchta Samiti under community led program comprising of instinctively interested villagers to give a Better & Healthier Environment to the Community.

Building Support The Workforce “SWACHCHTA SAINIK” Special training provided to all the Motivators. Enthusiasm infused through Motivational Songs and Slogans. Passion to Work for the Society. Enrolled as Members of Swachchta Samiti.

Participation of Women ParticipantsBear the burden of diseases and OD can be one cause. Target Segment The Most Inconvenient Group in absence of Toilets at Home. LeadersPlayed very Important Role in the Campaign as Initiators & Motivators

Innovative Techniques Catchy Slogans. Swachchta Rallies. Motivational Songs. Torch light Processions. Use of Khurpis for covering the faecal matter. Resistance overcome by involving one & all. Use of Recognition & Rewards. Feeling of Competition among villages for Recognition and Rewards.

Working of Community led Program Community Now believed Committees did Monitoring Committees Suggested ODF Plan Committees Formed ODF Program is Possible With Their Own Efforts Through Methods Devised By Them Evolved Action Plan From Within

Success Stories Villagers associated with the Total Sanitation Campaign shared their experiences and narrated Success Stories in the program organized by DRDA, Sirsa. This helped DRDA to motivate and inspire the people of other villages also who thought initially that making their village ODF would be a very difficult task if not impossible.

Fruitful Results Villages turned to be more Scenic and Livable. A significant Decline in the Diseases caused due to Unhygienic Conditions. Villagers are feeling very happy over the improved Sanitary Conditions and Healthy Environment. Students are now Aware about Importance of Cleanliness (Swachchta).

Impact of TSC can now be judged from the very fact that the women of rural areas have started thinking of not only hygienic conditions of environment but their personal hygiene also. They have started using Clean Pads instead of dirty & unhygienic cloths at the time of monthly cycle which used to be a major cause of diseases. Not only this, they have even started to make Clean Pads under Swarnjayanti Gram Savrojgar Yojna (SGSY) of Government of India. All the villagers have applauded & welcomed the steps taken by DRDA, Sirsa in the direction of linking personal hygiene of women with the self employment. Impact of TSC

What FUTURE Awaits…… Regular Monitoring Essential to Freeze the Change and to Stop Reversal of Process. Researches can be conducted for Impact of ODF on other Social Parameters.

The Ladder to Civilization The whole district can proudly say that it has actually attained freedom from the age old bars & has now captured the hygienic environment. This is just the Beginning of a New Era and the Ladder to Civilization for the Community.

The Last Wish To Begin With… We made a beginning from a village, covered a cluster of villages, reached blocks & successfully completed the District having each and every village as Open Defecation Free (ODF). We wish it should cover the State…. then Country…. and finally the Whole of the World…. To make this World a better Living Place for all LIVING BEINGS.

THANK YOU “JAI SWACHCHTA”
