P.R.O.P.S Positive Response to Overcoming Problems of Substance misuse in the family P.R.O.P.S Positive Response to Overcoming Problems of Substance misuse in the family In Partnership with North Tyneside Crime Disorder Reduction Partnership CDRP and Primary Care Trust PCT North Tyneside PROPS April 2012

How the Project was formed  In 1997 a group of women in the west end of Newcastle met to discuss drug and alcohol problems they had in their community  Formed a peer support group (Scotswood Women’s Family Support Group) to tackle issues and to campaign for better support for families  2002 received funding to establish a city-wide service and re- launched as PROPS  2007 following a tendering process, we were awarded the contract to develop a service in North Tyneside  2012 Re-launch in July as we are now PROPS North East due to the development of the service.

 Provide Confidential outreach specialist support to: family members, carers, friends, and/or anyone else affected by drugs and alcohol.  Supporting both young people and adults What do we do?

The model we use Kings Fund Compass Model (Carers Rights)  To be fully informed (newsletter, bulletins)  To be recognised & have my own needs met, including health needs (needs assessments)  Providing a break (respite, therapies)  Emotional support (1-1 and group/structured)  Training & support to care (drugs/alcohol)  Financial security (advocacy work)  Having a voice (involvement).

Carers Assessment & Care Plan (Carer Led)   Referral   School based 1-1 support for 12 years old and up   Assessment / care plan   1:1 - Drug and Alcohol Information YPCSOP (Young Person Carers Support Outcome Profile) IBA (Identification and Brief Advice around the risks of alcohol) CRAFT (Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training) - Reduce family members drinking or drug use - Get family member into treatment/recovery - Improve carers lifestyle & health Keeping Safe & identifying support Positive Communication & Problem Solving Enabling & Coping Strategies   CAF & Team Around the Child – Whole Family Approach   Time scale?

Why is it important to support and involve Carers?  Carers have first hand experience of the impact of drugs and alcohol on families and communities  They have a positive influence in helping their family member to: engage, sustain, and succeed in treatment and recovery  Carers have views about the support within services that help and those that don’t  They care about the services that are available in their own areas for themselves and others and are willing to give their time.
