An epic poem is a long, narrative poem about the deeds of a hero. Epic poem definition An epic poem is a long, narrative poem about the deeds of a hero.

The epic hero Embodies the favored qualities and characteristics within a culture or society (loyalty, courage, etc.)

Characteristics of Epic Poems

Epic Characteristic #1 The setting is broad (covering many places) and often includes supernatural realms

Epic Characteristic #2 There is usually an invocation, or a request to a higher power for help or inspiration in telling the tale

Epic Characteristic #3 The poem usually begins “in medias res” and then flashes back “In medias res” – in the middle of things

Epic Characteristic #4 The poem usually uses a number of epithets Epithets – Repeated descriptive term usually with someone’s name Dawn with it’s ringlets of gold

Epic Characteristic #5 Uses epic similes Simile – comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as” Epic simile – extended simile, often running several lines and used for emphasis

Example of an epic simile Example: “He was like a wild-boar or a lion when he turns this way and that among the hounds and huntsmen to defy them in his strength.”
