What is it?  A chemical that is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins  Polycarbonate plastic is lightweight and shows the best heat resistance, clarity and electrical resistance. Used in CDs, DVDs, cars, reusable food and drink containers such as baby bottles, and many other products.  Epoxy resins are used for circuit boards, paints, adhesives and others. Cured epoxy resins can be used for lining in metal food containers for increased quality  BPA can also be found in minimal amounts in the air, dust and water

What’s the big deal?  BPA in the body can interfere with the endocrine system (which regulates body changes and hormones). Basically it will mess with the brain, behavior, and the reproductive system.  If someone is exposed to BPA, such as in a workplace, it can irritate the eyes, lips and skin. Inhaling BPA can irritate the nose and throat and cause wheezing. Exposure can cause headache, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting.

Is it our concern?  South Dakota is one of almost 30 states that are considering a ban on BPA in baby bottles and other baby products in  The FDA refuses to regulate BPA in food containers but has agreed to let states pass laws to ban BPA in baby products.  As of March 31 st, 11 states have banned BPA by overwhelming votes, many near-unanimous. bpa-states-continue-the-fight-on-behalf-of-consumers.html#more
