Reading and Writing Fractions A fraction is a number that stands for part of something. A fraction is a number that stands for part of something. It is expressed in two parts. It is expressed in two parts. 4 3 The numerator tells how many of those equal parts the fraction stands for. The denominator tells how many parts are in the whole.

Example 1 What fraction of the pizza remains? What fraction of the pizza remains? 8 3 The numerator tells how many of those equal parts the fraction stands for. The denominator tells how many parts are in the whole.

Example 2 What fraction of the pencils are small? What fraction of the pencils are small? 7 4 The numerator tells how many of those equal parts the fraction stands for. The denominator tells how many parts are in the whole.

Representing Fractions 1. Circle Fraction: Draw a basic shape. 2. Divide the shape into 4 equal parts. 3. Shade 1 of the parts.

Representing Fractions 2. Rectangle Fraction: 4 1

Representing Fractions 3. Rectangle Fraction: 4 1

Representing Fractions 4. Rectangle Fraction: 4 1 Can you create a different representation of the fraction ¼?

Equivalent Fractions Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value. Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value === ? X 2

Equivalent Fractions ● Multiply or divide the numerator by the same number. = = = X

Simplifying Fractions A fraction is in simplest form when its numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1. A fraction is in simplest form when its numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1. A student survey shows that 6 out of 18 children in the class said that they would go to a theme park over the summer break.

Simplifying Fractions Step 2 Keep dividing by common factors until the only common factor is one. Step 1 Divide the numerator and the denominator by a common factor. 3 is a common factor of 6 and 18 == ÷ 3 18 ÷ 3 2 is a common factor of 2 and 6 == ÷ 2 6 ÷ 2 Adapted from Math To Know by Mary C.
