Introduction Purpose  To introduce Newhaven Display International Inc.’s full color OLED displays Objective  Discuss general overview of OLED technology  Explain how full color OLEDs work  Review the features of the full color OLED display Content  5 pages Learning Time  5 minutes Welcome to the Newhaven Display International full color OLED display product training module. This presentation will provide an overview of OLED technology, explain how the full color OLED technology works, and will review the key features.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Displays The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a brighter, higher contrast display that has faster response times, wider viewing angles, and consumes less power than conventional VFD, LED or LCD Displays. OLED displays are self- illuminating and require no backlight for maximum visibility in all environments. This also allows OLEDs to be significantly thinner than standard VFD, LED or LCD displays.

How OLED Displays Work How OLED Displays Work How the Organic Material Produces Light OLEDs are comprised of electrically active organic material placed between an anode (an electron-expelling electrode) and a cathode (an electron-receiving electrode). Carbon is the basis of the OLED’s organic matter. The "LED" stands for "Light Emitting Diode“, and describes the process of converting electric energy into light. When an electric current runs through the system, the anode sends electrons to the cathode, creating a current through the organic material. This charges the organic material, and when positive and negative charges hit the same molecule, it releases a photon, which we perceive as glowing.

How Full Color OLED Displays Work Full color OLEDs consist of a metal cathode with a negative charge, an electron transport layer, organic material, a hole transport layer, and an anode with a positive charge. The cathode and anode are arranged perpendicular to each other, creating a pixel where they intersect. Each pixel of a full color OLED is divided into red, green, and blue sub-pixels. When the controller sends an electric current to a particular pixel, the current passes through the organic material causing the material to emit light. By adjusting the intensity of the electric current in each red, green, and blue sub-pixel, specific colors and gradients can be created.

Features of Full Color OLED Displays  18bit/262K colors  128x96, 128x128, & 160x128 resolution sizes  >160° viewing angle  -30  C ~ +70  C operating temp  2000:1 contrast ratio  Built-in controller  Serial/Parallel MPU interface  256-step brightness  Low power  Built-in sleep mode  10μsec response time  RoHS compliant Newhaven Display International Inc.’s full color OLEDs are available in sizes 1.27”, 1.5”, and 1.69”. Featuring 262K colors, these passive matrix displays have a sharper and crisper viewing quality when compared to LCDs because of their rich black levels and 2000:1 contrast ratio. These displays also have faster and smoother graphic animations because of their 10μsec response time. Full color OLED displays are perfect for any industry, especially consumer and handheld because of their low power consumption. These unique displays also include a module containing all necessary logic. They do not have a backlight, which enables them to be 5mm thin fully assembled. Available upon request, Newhaven Display’s full color OLEDs can include a resistive or capacitive touch panel.

Summary  OLEDs are brighter, higher contrast displays that have faster response times, wider viewing angles, and consume less power than conventional VFD, LED or LCD Displays. They are self-illuminating and require no backlight for maximum visibility in all environments, allowing them to be significantly thinner than standard VFD, LED or LCD displays  Color OLEDs consist of a metal cathode with a negative charge, an electron transport layer, organic material, a hole transport layer, and an anode with a positive charge. The cathode and anode are arranged perpendicular to each other, creating a pixel where they intersect. When the controller sends an electric current to a particular pixel, the current passes through the organic material causing the material to emit light  Key features of a full color OLED  18bit/262K colors  1.27”, 1.5”, 1.69” resolution sizes  >160° viewing angle  -30  C ~ +70  C operating temp  2000:1 contrast ratio  Built-in controller  Serial/Parallel MPU interface  256-step brightness  Low power  Built-in sleep mode  10μsec response time  RoHS compliant In summary, OLEDs are brighter, higher contrast displays that have faster response times, wider viewing angles, and consume less power than conventional VFD, LED or LCD Displays. They do not contain a backlight, but instead, contain organic material that emits light when an electric current is sent. Full color OLED displays are perfect for any industry, especially consumer and handheld because of their low power consumption. Newhaven Display International Inc.’s full color OLEDs are available in sizes 1.27”, 1.5”, and 1.69” and can include a resistive or capacitive touch panel upon request.
