Bullet Defensive Techniques Outside Shades (Odd Numbers) Head Up Techniques (Even Numbers) Inside Shades (Where it gets a little weird)

Bullet Defensive History 1999 – 2002 Split 6 Defense (Assistant Coach) 15 – 23 Overall record 25 Points per game allowed 2003 – 2008 5-2 Monster Base Defense (Very Multiple) 32- 27 Overall record (1-4 playoff record) 20.1 Points per game

Bullet Defensive History 2009 4-4 Defense(Under)/5-2 Monster (Over) 10–2: Co-Conference Champs 11.3 Points per game allowed 2010 – 2011 4-4 Defense/Bear Front/4-2-5 vs Spread 21-3: Conference Champs and Back to Back Class 2A Quarterfinals 14. 13 Points per game allowed

2009 – Looking for Identity Starting point – Right Strength Call

2009 – Looking for Identity (Cont) Over call – Sent all d-lineman toward strength

2009 – Looking For Identity (Cont) Under Call – Lineman go away from strength

Weaknesses Tackles had to be multiple Rovers had to be multiple Play 3 tech and 5 tech Rovers had to be multiple Play OB and DE Over front (5) was more complicated if teams were multiple Played under 80% of time

Bullet Defensive Principals Front four multiple (Stem and Stunt) Very simple/ Gap control No confused players = faster players Easy to adjust to multiple offenses Strong side and weak side players Players get a great deal of reps in familiar technique Bend don’t break – not a huge blitzing team Zone coverage

Bullet Defense Positions Strong Side Tackle: Inside lineman End: Outside lineman Mike: Inside linebacker Sam: Outside linebacker Defensive backs do not have strength Right corner, Left corner, Free safety Weak Side Nose: Inside Lineman Anchor: Outside lineman Will: Inside linebacker Rover: Outside linebacker

Base Defense (Over)

Over Call

Under Call

Stack Call Out of a stack call we will either stack strong (over) or stack weak (under)

Tight Call Possible to run a tight under or tight stack. Usually ran to a TE side with no outside rec.

Front Stems Bounce Call Over bounce: Tackles stem from over to under Under bounce: Tackles stem from under to over Over Bounce

Front Stunts - Tag Tackles cross face of lineman on snap of ball Over Tag (under) – Shown Below Under Tag (over)

Front Stunts - Slam End (and Anchor if 2 TE) slam from 7 tech to 5 Becomes a Tight Front

Front Stunts - x End (and/or Anchor) cross the face of the TE Normally done with a OLB Blitz (Shown Below)

Combinations Stem and Stunt Over Bounce Tag (Over) – Shown Below Under Bounce Tag (Under) Under Bounce (Over) Slam Many Possibilities

Other Fronts and Stunts Pinch – Tackle and Nose both play shades Stack Pinch – Tackle and Nose start in 2 techs and pinch to “A” Gap Over Head – End plays 8 technique Strong Tag – Only Tackle Tags Weak Tag – Only Nose Tags

Blitzing Blitz linebackers by names of linebacker If we want to send Mike we call Mike Linebacker(s) called to go blitz their gap. Stunts are created by stunts previously talked about – Bounce, Tag, X, etc. Possibilities are endless. Limit to a small number each week depending on game plan.

Examples of Blitzes Over Tag Mike Under Tag X Will Sam

Pass Coverage – Cover 3 Cover receivers in area Don’t cover green grass Communication is key Out (Quick Out – within 5 yards) Under (Quick In – Routes under ILB) Dig (Deep in – 7+ yards) Dog (Deep Out – 7 + yards) Cross (Receiver crosses 1 deep zone into another) Vert – Vertical Route

Adjustments to Spread Do we need to adjust? Is a team in spread to run or throw? Do we need another safety in the game? Is 4 verticals a real threat? Where are they throwing the ball? Rover will move back and play safety. 4-3 Look Vs Doubles (Cover 2 Read) Vs Trips (¼ - ¼ - ½, with Will playing pass strength)

Defending Spread with Base Vs Doubles

Defending Spread with Base (cont) Vs Trips

Defending Spread with Spread Vs Doubles Cover 2, Cover 2 Bump, Cover 2 Man, Robber

Defending Spread with Spread (cont) Vs Trips – Will goes to strength Play ¼ - ¼ - ½ To single receiver side – Many Variations
