Research Groups Committed to Understanding Energy One of the world’s premier centers for R&D on energy production, distribution, and use and on the effects of energy technologies and decisions on society. Clean, efficient, safe production and use of energy have long been our goals in research and development. Unique facilities for energy-related R&D are used both for technology development and for fundamental investigations in the basic energy sciences that underpin the technology work.

ORNL: BioEnergy Science Center Their goal is to help develop viable, plentiful and clean alternative fuel sources for generations to come. Like turning common switchgrass or soybeans into fuel that runs your car.

ORNL: BioEnergy Science Center

ORNL: Energy & Engineering Sciences The Energy and Engineering Sciences Directorate conducts applied research and development programs that directly contribute to national goals of increasing energy production, improving energy transmission, and reducing energy consumption. These three goals form the foundation of a secure energy and environmental future.

ORNL: Energy & Engineering Sciences

ORNL: Fossil Energy Program Provides innovative solutions to the Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy for coal, oil, and gas technology. Major activities are directed toward exploration and production issues associated with these primary energy sources, as well as the development of gas separation systems (inorganic membranes and adsorbent carbons) that are critical enabling technologies and materials that are critical supporting technologies for advanced power systems being developed by DOE Fossil Energy. The program's research is focused in four areas: –Materials for Ultra-Supercritical Steam Power Plant –Fuel Cells and Functional Materials –Oil and Gas Research –Natural Gas and Carbon Sequestration

ORNL: Fusion Energy Sciences

ORNL is developing the understanding required for an attractive fusion energy source through integrated research, and is pursuing near-term applications of plasma science and technology in support of national goals. ORNL is a leader in innovative fusion concept development integrating our science, technology, and engineering activities. Core Competencies: –Experimental plasma physics –Plasma theory –Enabling technologies –Advanced materials –Atomic physics for plasma science –Technology and science applications

ORNL: NanoApplications Center The NanoApplications Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory employs state-of-the-art facilities and multidisciplinary R&D capabilities to transition the discoveries of nanoscience to innovative technologies for energy environment, and economic competitiveness. We foster innovation of new energy-related nanotechnologies and help transform industry by enabling the responsible development of processes for mass production and application of nano-scale materials, structures, devices, and systems that provide unprecedented energy, cost, and productivity benefits.

ORNL: NanoApplications Center

ORNL: Nuclear Science & Technology Provides leading-edge science, technology, and engineering research that support our Nation’s nuclear science and technology enterprise across a broad spectrum of applications including but not limited to advanced nuclear power systems, nuclear medicine, and nuclear fuel cycles.
