Stayin’ Alive: Animal Adaptations

What Are Adaptations? Adaptation- a special trait that helps an organism survive Animals have adaptations for: protection finding food moving reproduction living in different environments Adaptations happen naturally!! Animals do not cause or make their adaptations.

You Can‘t See Me: Camouflage Camouflage- an adaptation by which an animal can “hide” by blending in with its surroundings

Copycat: Mimicry Mimicry- when one organism imitates the traits of another organism to survive The Viceroy butterfly (top) imitates the bad-tasting monarch (bottom) to avoid being eaten. Predators looking for a butterfly snack will see this Owl Butterfly, confuse it with an owl and stay away.

More Adaptations The chameleon changes its body colors to remain camouflaged from predators and prey. Opossums “play dead” and release an odor to keep predators away. Skunks spray possible predators with a stinky chemical. Fright: The frilled lizard has body parts that it can use to frighten predators.

Body Structures are Adaptations!!! Giraffe strong lips for tearing leaves from trees long neck to reach high leaves spotted coat for camouflage long legs to run fast Cheetah long, flat tail helps it keep balance strong legs for running fast wide nose makes breathing easier while running spotted coat to hide from prey

Living in the Tundra: The Polar Bear Sharp teeth, sharp claws, and thick fur are some characteristics that allows the polar bear to live in the tundra.
