JUNE 19 TH - 22 ND, 2012 UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS THEME: “LEADERSHIP IS SURVIVING OUR CHALLENGES” 2012 State 4-H Junior Leader Conference

Jr. Leader Conference is for: Junior Leaders 9th-12th  4-H Junior Leaders who have completed 9th-12th Grade. new leadership skills  Those who want to learn new leadership skills for themselves and others.

Jr. Leader Conference is for: shareknowledge  Those willing to share knowledge they gain with those at home. new friends  Those who want to meet new friends from around Indiana.  Those who want to have fun!!!

How do I register? Educator  Tell your County 4-H Youth Extension Educator that you are interested in attending. applyingsigning up  Follow County guidelines for applying or signing up for a chance to attend. deadlineMay 15  State registration deadline is May 15. (County registration deadline will be earlier.)

Where is Jr. Leader Conference held? University of Indianapolis  The conference will be held at the University of Indianapolis. collegedorm college classrooms auditoriumeat cafeteria  We’ll stay in a college dorm; have sessions in college classrooms and in the auditorium; and eat in the student center cafeteria.

When is Jr. Leader Conference? June 19  Conference will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 19.  Entertainment, enjoyment, and energy will be experienced by all for 4 days!!! June 22  We’ll conclude before 12 noon on Friday, June 22.

What happens at Jr. Leader Conference?  Some of the activities include…  Skill  Skill Sessions  StateGroup  State Park Group meetings  Keynote  Keynote Speaker  General  General Sessions  Skit  Skit night  Recreation  Dance

Who leads the conference?  Jr. Leader Conference is a team effort among… delegates  The delegates, chaperones  Adult chaperones, &… State 4-H Junior  The State 4-H Junior Leader Council  16 Jr. Leaders who attended last year’s conference and were elected by their peers to plan and conduct this year’s conference.

Where is this Conference? Indiana State Fair Youth Leadership Conference is held at the Indiana State Fair. Students will get to stay in the newly renovated Discovery Hall.

When is ISFYLC? The 2012 Conference will begin on Tuesday, July 31 st, and end on Saturday, August 4 th

What happens at ISFYLC?  Help with the Indiana State Fair  Debate mock legislation at Indiana State House  Prepare meal for State Fair Directors  Scavenger Hunts, Fair Board proposals, etc…

Purdue Science Workshops  June 13 th -15 th, 2012 at Purdue University  4-H members in grades 9 to 12  Options include:  Aerospace  Animal  Computer  Engineering  Food & Nutrition  P.I.N.E.- Plants, Insects, and Natural Resources and the Environment  Robotics

Aerospace Workshop Build model rockets and planes Take a ride in a small airplane, Learn about the principles of flight and career opportunities

Animal Science Workshop  Species include…  aquaculture,  beef,  dairy,  goat (dairy and meat),  horse,  poultry,  sheep,  rabbit,  swine and  vet science – large animals  vet science – small animals

Computer Workshop Learn new and emerging trends in the computer science industry. Tracks-  App creater – Create your own smartphone App  3-D Modeling: Turn flat, boring graphics into 3-D images that appear to jump off the screen.

Engineering Science Workshop  Learn-  how robots operate,  what makes a good fuel for internal combustion engines,  how computers draw without pencils,  how to select the best vegetable/fruit variety for mechanical harvesting, and  how to surf the Internet.  The program will also introduce you to careers in various engineering fields.

Food Science & Nutrition Workshop  Interested in foods, science and being part of an exciting and rapidly expanding industry?  You will have an opportunity to:  get acquainted with faculty members, university departments and the Purdue campus.  determine taste, smell, and texture of foods.  work in labs to process foods, make ice cream, and make alternative sweeteners.  share what you learned about food science and nutrition with other youth.

P.I.N.E.- Plants, Insects, and Natural Resources and the Environment Learn about plants, insects, and other natural resources. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of 4-H project areas: beekeeping, crops, entomology, floriculture, forestry, geology, lawn and garden, plant science, small grains, soil and water conservation, weeds, weather and wildlife. Work with Purdue faculty and staff

Electric Workshop  June 22 nd -24 th, 2012, Purdue University  For members in Division III or above  Opportunities:  Wire switches and receptacles or an entire 4-way circuit using a computerized wiring program.  Wire (hands-on) switches and receptacles, both two and three-way.  Design and build a magnetic powered flashlight.  Learn how to use the various meters to measure electrical current, voltage and resistance.  Build an electronic "Decision Maker".

State 4-H Band June 23 rd -25 th, 2012 at Purdue University Performance at 4-H Round-Up Written application includes a recommendation by band director and/or instrument instructor. 4-H Band is for members who are in grades 9-12.

State 4-H Chorus June 23 rd - 27 th, 2012 at Purdue University Performances at 4-H Round-Up and at the Indiana State Fair Written application includes a recommendation by a vocal and/or choral instructor. 4-H Chorus is for members who are in grades 9-12.

4-H Youth Round-Up June 25 th - 27 th, 2012 at Purdue University Youth who have completed grades 7-9 Explore careers at Purdue University. Live in a Purdue Residence Hall, meet youth from across Indiana, and attend leadership sessions.

National 4-H Conference March 24 th - 29 th, 2012 in Washington D.C. for members in grades Meet 4-H members from across the nation and experience leadership training Application due December 1 st ; contact County Extension Office for details.

Citizenship Washington Focus June 16 th - June 23 rd,Washington D.C. Must be at least 15 years old Experience the nation’s capitol by taking tours, visiting dignitaries and law makers, and seeing some of our country’s most beautiful sites.

National 4-H Dairy Conference September 30 th -October 4 th, 2012 Held in Madison, WI for members 10 th grade and above

Indiana 4-H Youth & Adult Congress Saturday, November 10 th, 2012 For members in Grades 8-12 Indiana State Fairgrounds Experience leadership and essential skills training with 4-H members from across Indiana. Keynote speakers Banquet honoring 4-H Accomplishment Scholarship winners

National 4-H Congress November 23 rd – November 27 th, 2012 Atlanta, Georgia Students in Grades 9-12 Selection via state application process due January 15. Contact County Extension Office for details.

State Fair 4-H Exhibit Building Workers 4-H members at least 15 years old by the start of work End of July through the end of the Indiana State Fair, 2012 (full and part-time positions available) Assist with 4-H Exhibit Building set-up, check-in, judging, tear-down, and public relations with fair- goers. Applications available through County Extension office and are due April 1.

4-H Scholarships  Indiana 4-H Foundation - Grade 12 applicants; for any post secondary education  4-H Accomplishment - Grade applicants  State 4-H Club - Grade 12, based in part on financial need, students at Purdue in College of Agriculture or Consumer and Family Sciences  Applications due January 15; contact County Extension Office for more details

Key Club Award Award to recognize members for their tenure and participation in the 4-H Program. Members who have at least a 5-year tenure and who are 4-H Jr. Leaders may apply Application forms are available from the County Extension Office. Forms due to State 4-H Office by June 15.
