MAKING CONNECTIONS

WHAT ARE CONNECTIONS? Connections are links that the reader can make to the text and something outside of the text.

WHY MAKE CONNECTIONS?  Making connections helps readers understand a text better. It helps them make sense of what they are reading.  Making connections also helps readers respond to a text.

TEXT-TO-SELF CONNECTIONS  When you connect a text to a personal experience.  This reminds me of my vacation to…  I act like that character when…  I experienced something similar when…  I know how that feels because…

TEXT-TO-TEXT CONNECTIONS  When you connect a text to another text.  This reminds me of  a book I read…  a movie I watched…  a song I heard…  a picture I saw…

TEXT-TO-WORLD CONNECTIONS  When you connect a text to what is happening (or has already happened) in the world (i.e. a world issue or event).  Racism  Bullying  Child labor  Global warming

WAYS TO START A CONNECTION  This reminds me of….  I can relate to this text because…  This is similar to...  My connection is…
