How-to and tips to have you researching like a pro. Presented by: Katie Stollery LIS 657

The OAO is a massive database consisting of the Grove Art Online, the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.

A basic search on the OAO is easy and provides up-to- date results from all 5 major database within OAO and supplies biographical, image, and subject results. OAO has 16 thematic guides for easy researching on the most popular subjects. Wikipedia-style linking, connecting related topics and artists. We will look at the features of each database within Oxford Art Online in the following slides and accompanying tutorial.

The GAO is the electronic version of the 34 volume Dictionary of Art, plus special bibliographic information only available online. Contains over 45,000 articles covering the fine arts, architecture, decorative crafts, interior design, and furniture. Over 21,000 biographies 23,000 subject entries 6,000 art images and line drawings

Provides learning resources and guides for students and teachers. Links to biographies from other online resources, including the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Updated regularly (at least three times a year) to bring you the most current information as it becomes available. Streamlined for compatibility with: Endnote™, Procite™ RefWorks™, Reference Manager™

Good for quick reference of art terminology. Has 1,800 entries on terms, styles, historical periods, materials, techniques, movements, media, and foreign terms. Terms are cross-searchable within articles in the GAO. Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms by Michael Clarke and Deborah Clarke (2001)

The largest English-language reference guide on the subject of aesthetics. Over 600 articles by 500 of the worlds leading theorists, art historians, and philosophers. Includes visual arts as well as literature, theatre, music, dance, and popular culture. Edited by Michael Kelly (1998)

Over 2,600 entries on 1,700 artists Topics on art movements, theory, and criticism, along with regional and cultural differences. Lists major museums and galleries around the world. Cross-searchable within the GAO. Edited by Hugh Brigstocke (2001)

The articles in the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms are all part of the Grove Art Online package, and articles are linked throughout the GAO.

The Benezit Dictionary of Artists has been in print since 1911, but is newly electronic only on the OAO. Over 190,000 entries on artists from the well-know to the obscure. Biographical information on painters, sculptors, draftsmen, ceramicists, installation artists, and many other specialties from around the world and across history.

Entries provide information on museum holdings, exhibition information, and auction records. Contains over 11,100 images of artists’ signatures, monograms, and stamps of sales. Citation compatible with Endnote™, Procite™, ReferenceManager™, and RefWorks™ Vincent van Gogh signature
