History Abilene Baptist College began in The school didn’t have enough money to finish building, but was saved when a New York preacher, Dr. James B. Simmons, donated the money they needed. They became a university in 1925 and changed their name to Simmons University. In the Depression, they nearly closed due to lack of money, but were again saved when Mary and John G. Hardin of Burkburnet, TX donated money to help them stay open. In 1934, they changed their name to Hardin- Simmons University.

Academics HSU offers courses in geography, Greek, Hebrew, humanities, and physical sciences, as well. The university offers a doctorate in physical therapy, the first in Texas which is open to private citizens, as well as Doctor of Education, Doctor of Ministry and a Doctor of Science degrees.

Ministry  Hardin-Simmons is a private Baptist University.  Church services are held weekly for the entire student body.  Students get involved in Bible Study groups and go on mission trips, in addition to hosting concerts and other campus events.

Mascot: Cowboys and Cowgirls

Six White Horses These world famous western-style riders on White Horses, carry the six flags that have flown over Texas. They have performed for millions in parades, rodeos and at many other public functions.

Hand Signal This is the hand signal (?) (Confession: We couldn’t find any official hand sign, so I had to make an assumption based on this photo!)

Ring All graduates receive a ring. Click here Click here to read what the ring symbolizes.

HSU offers 18 varsity sports, including teams in basketball, golf, tennis, cross country, track, and soccer for men and women, as well as programs in football and baseball for men and volleyball and softball for women.
