What is a clause?  A clause is a group of words within a sentence that contains both a subject and a verb.  Remember the phrase?  The phrase has the same definition except it DOES NOT have a subject and verb.

Examples of Both  Clause: The grammar test that we are preparing for is a test that everyone at Beverly takes.  Phrase: The grammar final, taken on January 22, is a test that everyone at Beverly takes.

Types of Clauses  2 types of clauses on the test: Independent & Subordinate (Dependent)

Independent Clause  What does the word independent mean? Something can function by itself. Can the clause on the right function as a complete sentence on its own?  Steven loves to sleep in during the Winter Break, and Penelope enjoyed getting up early and jogging.

Independent Clause Yes, it can. Therefore the clause is independent.  Steven loves to sleep in during the Winter Break, and Penelope enjoyed getting up early and jogging.

Subordinate (Dependent) Clause  What does the word dependent mean? Reliant, needy Does the clause on the right need more to be a complete sentence?  It is obvious Tybalt has some anger issues because he is always looking for a fight.
