SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! KEYWORDS Wireless Sensors Communication 2

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 3 The SoNDa task is to demonstrate the capability of modern wireless mobile devices to act as sensors or sensor controllers as part of a system for data gathering, analysis, interpretation, delivery and display via internet or web based services.

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 4 Your Free Choice: The choice of application(s), sensors, their interfacing, web services, internet based processing, and user interface is your choice. There are no restrictions on the mobile platform, programming environment or operating system you adopt.

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 5 There are no restrictions* on the application area(s) you choose to work in Environment Health & Fitness Navigation & Positioning Movement or activity detection Logistics Games Social Monitoring Multiple User Interactions Audience Participation Music & entertainment * Other than the restrictions imposed by the contest rules

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! Elder Mobile System Home System Caretaker Site Caregivers Relatives Sensors An Example system: EU FP6 Project CAALYX: System Overview The project measures and monitors specific vital signs of the older person, detects falls and identifies which vital signs and patterns are relevant. Many different wireless communication technologies and sensors are used GPS Bluetooth Web Services

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 7 The Jury will expect: Novel system design and implementation that you have developed into a working demonstration model. You should make your work accessible and interesting to the audience of the public exhibition on the final day.

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 8 Technical Advice on the following topics: Sensors Power Consumption Minimum User Intervention Wireless security Robustness Bluetooth or other wireless platform Web Services & Code Generators Paper Trail

9 SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! Sensors: The sensors may include the mobile devices own components. Additional sensors can be connected wirelessly or wired to the mobile device using any available interface. Additional sensors may be hardwired to low functionality mobile devices to improve their functionality. Function and data processes may be wirelessly linked from applications hosted elsewhere. The mobile device must be able to discover and associate its sensors with no, or minimum, user interaction. Smart strategies should be adopted to ensure that a mobile device and its sensors are correctly associated. You should assume that other sensors and mobile devices are in the same area

SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! 10 Power Consumption: Particular consideration must be given to minimising the power consumption of the mobile parts of your system. You should consider including a power meter in your design to show battery levels and instantaneous power consumption. Minimum User Intervention: A key design aim should be to minimise user intervention at all stages. Mobile devices should automatically connect and re-connect without undue wastage of resources. Application(s) must gracefully degrade and recover as sensor move out of and into range. Careful consideration should be given to simplifying the installation of applications on mobile devices.

11 SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! Wireless Security: Data integrity and security should be considered. Robustness: The application(s) you choose to run on your system should illustrate the power and robustness of the communication architecture adopted. Bluetooth: Given its widespread use in mobile phones and portable devices, you will probably adopt a Bluetooth based solution, however, Wifi alternatives and proprietary communication standards are not excluded

12 SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! Web Services & Code Generators: The use of Web Services is an allowable option, code generators for the development of services and clients may also be used. Paper Trail: The Jury will expect to see draft documentation on your design showing your understanding of the design and development process system and lifecycle diagrams, interaction diagrams, state diagrams…… API usage, MIDlets, code segments……

13 SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! The contest documentation includes: Statement of the contest RULES and web information for teams This presentation Written statement of the contest task

14 SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore! Judging The Jury will visit each team in their lab on Wednesday evening. Members of the Jury will visit each team in their lab on Friday morning. Members of the Jury will visit each teams’ stand at the public exhibition early on Friday afternoon. Teams will be required to submit via on Thursday evening by 20:00 documentation on their design and processes (detailed requirements later). Results will be announced at the Award Ceremony on Friday Afternoon.

15 Contacting the Jury: Room: C206 Ext: Task Design: The task was devised by members of the Jury Prof. Timothy Hall (Jury President), Dr John Nelson, Dr Joe Griffin, University of Limerick, Ireland SoNDa Sensor Network for Data Explore!
