Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide Monday, August 10, 2015 Life Impact The University of Adelaide RFID Standards and Profiles (Alan Butters Session) RFID Standards –ISO/IEC The standard that describes how the RFID Tags and Readers communicate with each other. Doesn’t define what data is on the tag. –ISO/IEC Describes how the data on the tag is stored. Still draft and awaiting approval. Structured in 3 parts. –Part 1 – Defines what data elements that libraries may choose to place on their RFID tags. –Part 2 – Flexible encoding of selected data; based on another ISO standard (ISO/IEC 15962) –Part 3 – Fixed encoding; based on Data Model standards like the Danish Data Model.

Which one to Use? –Standards Australia has endorsed the flexible encoding method (Part two) –Part two - Also favoured by other countries such as the UK and the USA. –Australian libraries should ensure RFID providers are at least implementing parts one and two of ISO/IEC 28560, –This ensures country-wide interoperability. What are RFID providers doing about the new standard? –Most are support draft standard now, –Or promising to within 12 months of the standard acceptance. –plan to support both encoding parts (2 and 3)

Many RFID providers have indicated conversion to the standard can be achieved seamlessly if data is on current tags. system could read the data from each tag, reformat it into the new model and then write it back to the tag to the new standard Profiles –New data standard does NOT ensure interoperability between libraries or consortium. –Libraries can still choose what data to put on tag –Consortia in Victoria, NSW and WA, as well as PLAIN are implementing ‘profiles’ that define a minimum fields to be included on a tag.
