Rounding Decimals

Steps for Rounding Decimals 1. Draw a line after the digit on the place to which you are rounding. 3.543 rounded to the nearest tenth 3. 5 4 3 2. Draw an arrow to the digit on the right. 3. If the digit after the line is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, then the digit before the line remains the same. 4. Drop all the digits after the line. 3. 5 4 3

If the digit after the line is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, then the first digit goes up. Round 3.573 to the nearest tenth. 3. 5 7 3 3. 6 Remember to drop all digits after the line!! 7 3

REMEMBER: 5 or more, add one more 4 or less, let it rest!

The Rounding Poem Find your number Look right next door 4 or less, just ignore 5 or more, add one more!

on You’re FIRE!!!!!  4.17 Round 4.167 to the closest hundredths 4.167 Find your number 4.17 Look right next door 4 or less, just ignore 5 or more, add one more! Keep it up! You’re on FIRE!!!!! 

Special Case! Rounding a 9 Round 2.197 to the hundredths place Since there is a “9” in the hundredths place and the digit to the right is a “7”, consider the tenth and hundredths together – 19 – do you leave it at 19 or move it to 20? 2.197 rounded to the hundredths place is 2.20

4.95 rounded to the nearest tenth is 5.0 Round 4.95 to the tenths place Since there is a “9” in the tenth spot and a “5” to the right, consider the ones and tenths together…… should you leave it at 49 or move it to 50? 4.95 rounded to the nearest tenth is 5.0

Remember If you are asked to round to the nearest tenth…….your answer stops at the tenth place! Example: Rounding 42.73 to the tenths place would be 42.7
