Presentation transcript:

 The Blue Dacnis or Turquoise Honeycreepers are small Tanagers.  They occur naturally in Central America - Nicaragua to Panama, and Trinidad – as well as in South America south to Bolivia and northern Argentina. They inhabit forests and other woodlands.  They construct bulky nests that are typically placed in trees.

 American Goldfinches live in open woodlands and nest in shrubs. They eat some types of seeds.  American Goldfinches breed later than most North American birds. They wait to nest until June or July when milkweed, thistle, and other plants have produced their fibrous seeds, which they incorporate into their nests and feed their young.

 Baltimore Orioles live in open woodlands and eat fruit, but they sometimes eat insects. They nest in trees and are recognized by their bright orange and black plumage.  Unlike robins and many other fruit eating birds, Baltimore Orioles seem to prefer only ripe, dark- colored fruit. Orioles seek out the darkest mulberries, the reddest cherries, and the deepest- purple grapes, and will ignore green grapes and yellow cherries even if they are ripe

 Blue Jays live in forests and nest in trees. They are omnivores and love acorns.  The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin (mel- uh-nin), which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs.  The oldest known wild, banded Blue Jay lived to be at least 17 years and 6 months old.

 Eastern Bluebirds live in grasslands and nest in tree cavitys(usually).  Eastern Bluebirds eat mostly insects, wild fruit, and berries. Occasionally, they have also been observed capturing and eating larger prey items such as shrews, salamanders, snakes, lizards, and tree frogs.

 Indigo Buntings live in open woodlands and nest in shrubs. The eat insects and seeds.  Indigo Buntings are famous for their songs.  Indigo Buntings learn their songs as youngsters, from nearby males but not from their fathers. Buntings a few hundred yards apart generally sing different songs, while those in the same “song neighborhood” share nearly identical songs. A local song may persist up to 20 years, gradually changing as new singers add novel variations.

 Mourning Doves live in open woodlands, nest in trees, and eat seeds.  Perhaps one reason Mourning Doves survive in the desert: they can drink brackish spring water without becoming dehydrated the way humans would.  Mourning Doves mate for life and will stay together forever.

 Parrots and Parakeets are the same thing except Parakeets are smaller than Parrots.  Parrots are found on all tropical and subtropical continents including Australia, Oceania, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central America, South America, and Africa. Their diet consists of seeds, nuts, fruit, buds, and other plant material. Some species eat animals and carrion. Almost all Parrots nest in tree hollows.
