Youth with Brain Injury Project presented by: William D. Brock, PhD

 2009 the Department of Juvenile Justice entered into the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initative, Youth with Brain Injury Project.  Championed by Delegate Scott, this was a multi-agency effort that included:  Department of Juvenile Justice  Virginia Commonwealth University  Department of Correctional Education  Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services  Brain Injury Association of Virginia  Department of Education

1) Create a standardized assessment protocol to identify youth with brain injury. 2) Study the prevalence of brain injury among youth committed to the DJJ.

 Hit or Hurt Head? %  Of This 52.5%  Felt Dazed or confused? - 70%  Experienced Headaches? - 68%  Lost Consciousness? - 29%  Memory Problems? - 27%  Poor Frustration Tolerance?- 25%  Concentration Problems?- 21%

 Incidents of Hypoxia - 17%  Prenatal Drug/Alcohol Exposure - 13%  Other Perinatal Trauma - 11%

 Clinician Conclusion that Testing was Suggestive of Brain Injury 35.7% of youth tested

 Medical Record Indicates History of:  Hypoxia %  Prenatal Drug/Alcohol Exposure %  Other Perinatal Trauma %

 Positive Findings for Both Testing Indicators Suggestive of Brain Injury and/or Prenatal Drug/Alcohol Exposure were Positively Correlated With Higher Rates of Institutional Offenses
