Outline 1. Initial Problem Statement 2. Customer Needs Assessment o Weighting of Customer Needs / AHP Chart 3. Revised Problem Statement 4. External Search o Patent Search / Benchmarking 5. Concept Generation o Morphological / Pugh Charts 6. Concept Selection 7. Final Design 8. Conclusions

Project Management How we went about this project? o Gather critical information  Customer Needs / External Search Allocate tasks  Focus on strengths Collaborate ideas and concepts  Morph / Pugh Charts Decide final design  Concept Selection and Model Design

Hierarchical Customer Needs Chart 1. Usability (0.25, 0.25) F.1 Brush Teeth 2. Sustainability (0.18,0.18) F.1 Use as little energy as Possible F.2 Debris contained C.1 Energy consumption from power source 3. Cost (0.159, 0.159) C.1 Material Cost 4. Performance (0.157, 0.157) 5. Design (0.091, 0.091) F.1 Grip F.2 Brush Head 6. Availability (0.068, 0.068) 7. Sound (0.046, 0.046) C.1 Loud 8. Battery Life (0.024, ) C.1 Rechargeable Batteries are Standard F.1 Batteries can be recharged 9. Brand (0.023, 0.023) F.1 Recognizable

Revised Problem Statement We have decided to focus on an electric tooth brush. We will be trying to make this product smaller lighter and more sustainable. Along with these we are also trying to cut down on the noise it creates and make the battery more efficient. We will do this by employing different techniques from across different engineering disciplines.

Summary of external search activities Conduct an Internet search on the reference toothbrush and rival toothbrushes Patent search Benchmarking o Oral-B CrossAction Pow Max Whitening, Sonicare FlexCare, Arm & Hammer Spinbrush Pro Clean, and Oral-B Vitality Dissection Design Target

Concept Generation Using our morph charts (next slide), we found our top 5 designs for each category o Energy Mechanism  Jake and Rachael o Power Generation  Jake and Rachael o Brush Head Design  Kyle and Ayagoz o Body Design  Kyle and Ayagoz

Concept Selection Pugh Charts 4 Functions: o Energy Mechanism  Cost Performance Sustainability Design o Power Generation  Cost Sustainability Battery Life Performance o Body Design  Design Sustainability Usability Cost o Brush Head Design  Design Performance Usability Sustainability

Final Design Solid Works Model & Rough Sketch Toothbrush Sketch Charger

How it works The battery supplies energy for the motor The motor then spins the attached metal arm This metal arm is attached to some gears that allow the brush head to rotate the the whole way around for optimal cleaning A circuit board will also make sure that the battery is not over-charged

In Conclusion We feel that our redesigned toothbrush is very successful at fulfilling the needs of the customer o More sustainable o More efficient o Better cleaning action
