CBC JH Air Conditioning Safety

CBC JH Loss of Ozone on Human Health Loss of Ozone allows Ultra violet rays to reach earth Affects our skin, eyes and immune system Increases chances of skin cancer Increases risk of cataracts Reduces ability of immune system to reject cancers

CBC JH Personal Safety Wear safety glasses, goggles or face shield (R-12 can cause blindness) Burns from a engine that has not cooled off Adequate Ventilation Make sure car is in Park and ventilated Caution around moving parts Can cause frostbite on bare skin

CBC JH High Pressure Containers and hoses must not leak Containers must be able to hold high pressure without splitting or bursting Pressures change with changes in temperatures Pressures change with compressor or pumps

CBC JH High Pressure Containers Must not overheat the pressure vessel Must not overfill the pressure vessel Pressure containers are usually designed with some elasticity. Containers are made with fusible plugs or relief valves

CBC JH Hydrostatic Pressure The Expansion of liquid while undergoing a temperature change. For example: If you overfill a vessel at a lower temperature then subject it to a higher temperature, the liquid will expand and if you overfilled the vessel there will be no room for the liquid to expand and the vessel will explode!

CBC JH Refrigerant Cylinders Refrigerant Cylinders are designed to withstand a maximum temperature of 130 degree Fahrenheit To Prevent overfilling, never fill a container more than 60 percent of its gross weight. (ex: 18 LB in a 30 LB container or 30 lbs in a 50 LB container)

CBC JH Precautions Do not put flame near containers Do not steam clean container that has refrigerant in it. Be careful of contamination Always monitor both sides of system with gauge set (high and low side) Before loosening fittings or bolts, etc. make sure pressure is relieved

CBC JH More Precautions Use pressure relief valves on containers if subject to high temperatures Do not allow compressor to pump liquid or be sluged oil Keep your mind on the job Be vigilant

CBC JH TOXIC GASES TOXIC = POISONOUS REFRIGERANTS VARY IN TOXICITY R-12 IS HARMLESS WITH AIR THE DANGER DEPENDS ON: –THE NATURE OF THE GAS ITSELF –ITS CONCENTRATION IN AIR –HOW LONG A TIME IT IS BREATHED

CBC JH DECOMPOSITION OF GASES GASES IN THEIR NATURAL STATE MAY BE HARMLESS MIXED WITH OTHER GASES THESE GASES BECOME TOXIC WITH HEAT APPLIED TO THEM, THEY CAN BECOME TOXIC

CBC JH PRECAUTIONS RELATING TO GASES DO NOT BREATHE IF NOT NECESSARY DO NOT IGNORE JUST BECAUSE NO ODOR DO NOT DISCHARGE GAS (AT ALL) DO NOT DISCHARGE HALOCARBON GAS IN ROOM THAT HAS A FLAME
