How can I use inequality in a real life situation?  My friend and I love going to Disneyland so we are planning on going several times throughout the year. For frequent goers like us, they have 4 different types of annual passes. Before buying an annual pass, we want to know how many times we have to go in a year to get our money’s worth…

Assuming that we’re only going to one park in one day…  We’ll be paying $72.00 without the annual pass. To find how many days we need to go to get our money’s worth with an annual pass, set up an inequality.

For the cheapest annual pass, Southern CA Select ($144)  We want our annual pass to be cheaper than it would cost us to pay each time we go to the park.  To get our money’s worth, we want to find out the number of days we need to go that would cost us (without the annual pass) the same or more than the annual pass.  It would cost us normally $72 for a day pass, so we need to go x number of days for the total cost (72x) to be more than or equal to the cost of our annual pass ($144)…

Translating into Inequality  72x ≥ 144 x ≥ 2, where x = # of days we need to go to get our money’s worth for our annual pass.  So if we get the $144 (Southern CA Select) annual pass, we need to go at least 2 days.  In other words, it would be worth buying the annual pass if we go to Disneyland twice or more throughout the year.

For other annual passes  Southern California: $194 72x ≥ 194 x ≥ 2.69, 3 days or more  Deluxe: $289 72x ≥ 289 x ≥ 4, 4 days or more  Premium: $429 72x ≥ 429 x ≥ 6, 6 days or more
