Chapter 1 Section 4 Write Equations and Inequalities Objective: Students will translate verbal sentences into equations or inequalities Standard: A.SSE.1 & A.SSE.2

Vocabulary: Equation: A mathematical sentence formed by placing the symbol = between two expressions. Inequality: A mathematical sentence formed by placing one of the symbols or ≥ between two expressions.

Expressions vs. Equations: ExpressionsEquations No = Have = Need values Can solve SymbolMeaningExample = Is equal to IS, the same as < Is Is less than Fewer than ≤ Is Is less than or equal to At most, no more than > Is Is greater thanMore than ≥ Is Is greater than or equal to At least, no less than

Example 1 Write an equation or an inequality: a.The sum of twice a number r and 3 is 11 b.The quotient of a number n and 2 is at most 16 c. The product of 7 and the quantity 2 more than a number q is less than 12. 2r + 3 = 11 r ≤ 16 2 7(2 + q) < 12

Example 2 Check whether 5 is a solution of the equation or inequality. a. 24 - 3d = 9 b. 3x + 4 = 18 c. 2w – 7 ≤ 3 d. 4 + 3p > 19 24 – 3(5) = 924 – 15 = 9Yes 3(5) + 4 = 1815 + 4 = 18NO 2(5) – 7 ≤ 310 – 7 ≤ 3Yes 4 + 3(5) > 194 + 15 > 19NO

Example 3 You have saved $78 to buy a snowboard that costs $150. How much more money do you need to save to be able to buy the snowboard? Write an equation for this situation and solve. 78 +x = 150 Amount saved $ needed Total Cost x = 150 - 78 x = $72
