Overview  Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions 40% of energy consumption 13% water consumption

What are Green Buildings? Video Courtesy of KQED Multimedia Series Exploring Northern California Science, Environment and Nature.

What are Green Buildings  Discussion What is a green building? What are the key concepts for green building? What are the benefits?

What are Green Buildings  Green Building, also known as green construction or sustainable building, is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from site selection, to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction. Resource: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. (October 28, 2009). Green Building Basic Information. Retrieved December 10, 2009, fromhttp://

What are Green Buildings  Benefits: 15% of Gross Domestic Product or GDP per year Green building is a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs Reduce CO2 emissions by 33 – 39% Reduce water usage by 40% Reduce Energy Usage by %

What is the USGBC?  The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to transforming the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.  Developed the (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ (LEED)

LEED Rating System  LEED is a voluntary, internationally recognized green building certification system  Offers third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built aimed at improving performance and reducing environmental impact  Provides building owners and operators a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building solutions  Can be applied to any building type and any building lifecycle phase

LEED Rating System  LEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types – commercial as well as residential. Homes Neighborhoods Commercial Interiors Core and Shell New Construction Schools, Healthcare, Retail Existing Buildings, Operations and Maintenance

LEED Rating System  Promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas: Sustainable Sites Water Efficiency Energy and Atmosphere Materials and Resources Indoor Environmental Quality Innovation and Design

LEED Rating System  Levels of LEED Ratings Points are awarded on a 100-point scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts

LEED Rating System  Buildings are certified based on the following number of points Certified points Silver points Gold points Platinum points  10 bonus credits are available, four of which address regionally specific environmental issues  A project must satisfy all prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points to be certified

LEED Rating System  The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) oversees and manages LEED certification for projects registered under any LEED Rating System Choose a Rating System Projection Registration Prepare Application Submit Application Application Review Certification
